The rooms are very very big, but a bit run down. Scrape marks on doors, weird ventilation noises at night, you have to hand your key in when you leave the building, quite a few little issues. The rooms have full sized bathrooms with a bath, however after running one the bathroom was hot and muggy for hours after. The biggest deterrent though is that the hotel is a 10 minute plus walk to the nearest train/subway station. Staying here makes it a bit harder to get around. I would suggest finding a hotel next to a station. There probably some good ones.

Find another place!
Arrived early and had to check bags, no accommodation for early checkin or late check out. Rooms carpet had to have been 40 years old with a vivid smell of mold not only in the room but the entire hotel. The water also had a strange odor which prompted us to buy bottles even though the rest of japan and even Kyoto didn’t have the same issue. The bathroom was tiled floor, walls and ceiling and reminded us of a submarine or underground dirty basement. The bed was a brick, couldn’t sleep more than a few hours without waking up in pain, almost better off on the floor. Bed also lacked sheets, just one covering a nasty mattress with stains and a comforter. Even though the staff was very friendly and the location is great, it wasn’t worth the lack of sleep or feeling dirty almost all the time even after showers.

Good location to see Gion .
Good location to see the Gion area. It is on a bus route to Kyoto Central. Also close to bus routes and metros to to see all the main points of interests in Kyoto. The staff was very helpful in giving us the directions to reach the main sites. The rooms are small, but very comfortable. There are no cupboards so all your clothes will have to stay in your suitcases.

Good hotel in a touristy location
A nice hotel with an average to good breakfast. The location is great if you want to be near some lovely temples and right in the middle of hoards of tourists. If I end up in Kyoto again I'll try to stay a bit further west towards Nishiki market.

I'd love to stay here again if I'm ever in Kyoto
First off, the service was impeccable. The staff were all so accommodating, kind, and helpful. I cannot stress that enough. The room was clean, but there was a strange/off smell in the hallway on our floor...but that was kind of all over the city. I'm not sure what it was. It wasn't really enough to be gross or inconvenience us, as we only encountered it to and from the elevator. The room was very spacious. The beds were very hard. We had a double room, so I slept with the comforter on one of the beds, and used the one from the second bed as a sheet to add some cushion to it. Honestly, it may be the way the beds are there, but that was my only "issue" with the hotel, and even then it wasn't much of an issue. It was very central to everything. A quick walk to the bus stop that takes you to the tourist spots, it's right next to a shrine, and it was just really well located.

Poor quality, overpriced hotel
We decided to extend our stay in Kyoto and this was the only place we could get that had a non-smoking room. Apparently for a reason. The staff was very nice, but this hotel has several serious problems. The first, and most serious problem is that the beds are absolutely terrible. We had stayed at a ryokan immediately prior, and these beds were a downgrade from literally sleeping on the floor. The second problem is the restaurant in the basement is really, really bad. They will try to sell you breakfast at the lobby desk, and the reason is that if you went down and saw the buffet yourself, you would never buy it. There were only two things that were good about the hotel: The bathrooms are quite large. The juice on the buffet was acceptable.

Good Size Rooms for Family of Four
This was a nice, but not great hotel in Kyoto. The location in Gion is good to walk to many sites. Bus stops close by and you can take the 100 Express or 206 to/from the Kyoto train station for 240 yen and which takes approx. 20 minutes. Subway is a 7-8 minutes walk. Many sites within walking distance. Rooms were clean and neat, and we were able to get a room for all four in our family with four separate beds. Staff is very nice, but they would not let us check-in early before 15:00 and wanted approx. 1000 yen per hour for a late check-out after 11:00. They will store your bags though for free. Kyoto hotels are expensive and this hotel was a decent deal, but still pricey. It does not offer a lounge nor does it have a lobby you would want to hang out in. The wifi worked well and was free. The beds were comfortable and linens were nice, Overall, I would say it is a good option for staying in Kyoto, but you may want to shop around for a better deal/location depending on what you want to see in Kyoto.

We stayed that in april 2016. The hotel was in great location like other reviews stated. Walking distance to Gion and many other tourist attractions. Staff was extremely nice and provided very good services. The check-in service was fast. The room was clean except the carpet felt dirty. The bathroom was so spacious and have an"onsen" share-bath feel. The bed was filmsy and mattress, pillow, and blanket not very comfortable. The room is pretty bare, you can tell that this was something put together quick for service. Due to the time we went was a high season, we paid like a 4/5 hotel stars price so thus I didn't think it was worth the money. If I only paid 3 stars price, then this hotel would completely meet my expectations.

It was a pleasure staying at the Sunline! It was clean, comfortable, well located, and after week felt like home. The staff were charming and helpful. Breakfast, while not offering the level of choice of a luxury hotel, was the best of our 3 week stay in Japan. Everything was good and delicious, and I would not want more. Breakfast was also fairly priced compared to luxury hotels which charge twice as much with no better quality.

Excellent stay! Highly recommended
We stayed in a family room. It was very large, with two queen sized beds. The bathroom was also huge. Service was excellent, the room was clean, and the location couldn't be beat. We'd definitely stay here again. My only suggestion is that you should have the name of the hotel and address written in Japanese since some cab drivers didn't seem to know it. As others suggested, it might be best to take a cab from the train station if you have luggage although there are several buses that stop right by the hotel. I am so happy that we found this place - it was perfect! We were two adults and two younger teens.

Fair hotel stay in Kyoto
We had a fair experience with this hotel in Kyoto. The nearby neighborhood looks a little old and rough but it is not so bad. It is actually conveniently located by a shrine that you can walk through at night and was quite pleasant. Also, there is a nice and busy street nearby with many shops and restraunts if you are up for the walk. The hotel itself was quite expensive for what you get. You must also pay extra for parking and breakfast. The breakfast says "Japanese and Western style" but it is not really Western. We did not enjoy the breakfast so much but made do. The bedding and pillows were quite uncomfortable. There was only one pillow on the bed and it was a very uncomfortable one. Room was very small but that is typical of Japan. The service was very nice which is always my experience in Japan. Overall, I would only recommend if you are booking last minute and not many options.

Had paid approx AUD 225 per night through Expedia and then wanted to extend for 1 extra night. Granted that it was a holiday period and was told by reception that they did not have any rooms available, however a short while later I received a call back to say that I could retain the room that I was staying in but the rate was AUD 400. I'm all for a free economy, but that was gouging !

I booked at the last moment as there were no rooms available in my more usual hotels. I was pleasantly surprised: room was clean, service friendly. I did not try the restaurant, but there are plenty of good places to eat (and things to see) in the neighborhood.

Great albeit pricey hotel near Gion.
Very large room by Japanese and Kyoto standards. A definite upgrade from the business hotels (ie. APA I'm used to use). Pleased with the stay with 3 issues though. 1. At C$300 a night breakfast for two should be included. 2. Large in-room bathroom but no public bath on site. 3. Beds were too hard, quite usual for Kyoto. My Japanese companion did not mind though, so this might be a case of western preferences. Being a tourist traveler I did miss having access to an onsen and a comprehensive breakfast.

Good Hotel in Fantastic Location
This hotel is right in Gion, where you can easily walk around the entertainment district. The staff is friendly and helpful, but not yet fully aligned with contemporary hotel practices — for example, instead of actually making up our room, all the linens for us to use were left at our front door. And for the moment, a card reader system is not in place, and physical keys are to be left at desk — with valuables for safeguarding — whenever you go out. An excellent quality buffet breakfast is convenient, and charged separately. Taxi drivers are not all aware of the latest name for this hotel.

It is the hotel's official policy NOT to make restaurant reservations for guests. Unless you speak Japanese and can do it yourself, you should not stay here. This is an enormous inconvenience.

I was happy I stayed here
I stayed here with my wife for 3 days in May 15. The location is excellent (Gion) and all conveniences (eateries, shopping, convenience stores) are just a short walk away. Very well connected by Bus and train so it was very convenient for sightseeing.
