A hidden gem in Northern Kyoto

Posted Mar 26, 2016 on Hotels
I couldn't get a reasonably priced room in the center of Kyoto since it was spring break and cherry blossoms-watching season so I ended up booking at Nenrinbo. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and room. It's a little off the beaten path, but I enjoyed the walk in this quieter part of Northern Kyoto. I stayed at Nenrinbo on a Sunday so my stay here ended up being more like a solo getaway...all with the luxury of a pool-sized bath--OFURO! Since I timed my meals on the early side so I ended up having the bath all to myself when I went to the shared bath after my meal! I speak Japanese but was pleasantly surprised by how conversant the staff were in English.

Excellent ryokan and service

Posted Mar 7, 2016 on Hotels
The service exceeded all our expectations. The staff people were the nicest people we have ever met. The rooms are designed in the traditional Japanese style and sleeping on the tatami mats was actually quite comfortable. The rooms where nice clean and have a nice view of a japanese garden and also it has a good view of the mountains. Our japanese room had a private bathroom but we also had access to a traditional japanese bath which had the most amazing view to the mountains.. It's near enough to Kinkaku-ji and a few other shrines/temples, and quite near to Arashiyama as well.

Peaceful retreat

Enjoyed a restful sleep during my stay in the ryokan. Didn't use the public bath but room amenities were up to my expectation. Staff were accommodating. Would like to stay once I get a chance to go back .

one night in kyoto

Posted Apr 28, 2015 on Hotels
We stayed one night here as we wanted to experience the traditional japanese tatami. This ryohan is a little far from the main shopping streets of kyoto. The room is clean and nice though it looks a little worn out in the inside. We had booked the deal with dinner and breakfast inclusivr and though they are all very pretty in presentation but we find the taste just ok and a little disappointed in the smoked salmon which is quite hard. Also when we tried to book the complimentary shuttle to the golden temple we are disappointed to learn that it is not available for that day due to a private event.counter staff are very helpful though and is very patient in providing advice on the best way to get to our destination by public transport and that helps us alot as taxi is not cheap here.

Nice introduction to traditional Japanese lodging

Posted Apr 10, 2015
Pros: As above The staff were attentive and courteous Delightful walk fro the hotel to Golden Pavilion
Cons: Access to the hotel is difficult especially with heavy luggage- via subway bus and 20 " walk The courtesy bus was infrequent and only operated twice
Location: Close to Golden Pavilion but otherwise a long way from Kyoto's highlights
We enjoyed the traditional food and Onsen and proximity to the Golden Pavilion

A ryokan in a modern hotel

Posted Nov 18, 2014 on Hotels
This was my chance to stay at a ryokan (traditional Japanese Inn) so I was happy to stay here. It is located in an outer district o Kyoto, in a good seasonal tree viewing placement. From the outside, it looks like a pleasant mid size modern hotel but the rooms are traditional with straw mats and futons. I want to praise the food as it is excellent. I had the seasonal dinner and the Japanese breakfast. I was offered the Western breakfast but that would seem to miss the point of going to a ryokan. The service and appointments are clean and very nice. All the expected elements for a ryokan are in place. Also massage

We are very pleasure to hear that you enjoyed the time you spend at Nenrinbo. We place importance on feeling of the season and traditonal japanese ryokan. It is a bit far from central kyoto however there is a lot of things to do or feeling Kyoto. Thank you very much for staying with us. We look foward to seeing you again.

Pros: The traditional japanese experience
Location: There is nothing nearby! Be ready to take buses everywhere!!!
Would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Location is horrible, far from everything, no subway nearby, you will be depending on buses/taxis for everything. The hotel is too expansive and doesn`t give enough value for the price. Rooms are ok, but not fantastic as the price would imply. The high point were the meals, but not for the flavour, but for the variety and presentation. But don`t order drinks, since they are overpriced too and it`s a bad surprised upon checking out. Also, there was a downside to the meals: since you have to have dinner by 7:30pm it works as a curfew on you, which, combined with the terrible location of the hotel, does not allow you to enjoy kyoto by night! Staff was ok, apart from a guy at the front desk who was rude to me when i got to the hotel 3 minutes late for dinner (again, terrible location, buses...).

Thank you so much for staying our hotel. Our hotel is part of central Kyoto city, so it takes time to go a commercial facility like a shopping store and so on. However, around here is full of greenery, so it’s possible to stay relaxing. We think it’s a good point. In Kyoto city, when going sightseeing, it’s many times to take a bus. Almost all of the tourists may feel that it’s inconvenience and troublesome. If we were in your position, we would have same feelings. However, there are a lot of cultural properties in Kyoto, so we have to protect it and landscape. For this reason, it is difficult to construct a public transportation like a railroad only for the reason that many choices of transfer is convenience. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation. About meals, we devote ourselves to enjoy a time to have it.
