The room was basic, not really an issue because you're hardly ever in the room. But don't expect the fancy room in the pictures unless you book the royal side. The beach is rocky and washed out from all the storms. Food at both the buffet and ala cart restaurants were not that good, as typical with all inclusive resorts. However, the weather was nice and the drinks were cold. If I were to go back I'd book at the Royal Catalonia.

Almost didn't go

We came in the day after hurricane Maria passed. They upgraded us to the Royal Catolina as our room had some damage. it was a great vacation. Hotel was clean and new. Service was mostly good. It's good if you speak spanish. We didn't but got by just fine. I gave them 4 out of 5 stars because of the food. It was hit or miss. Steak was great Carribean was terrible. Buffets just okay. We got our only bad service at terrace breakfast restaurant. The beach had some damage but was still nice. We would definitely return.

Great hotel. Lovely staff. Beautiful beach.

Had a great time at the Catalonia. The staff was excellent. Very friendly. Our housekeeper Reina was excellent. She cleaned our rooms very well. Took care of our needs since we had a toddler with us and was very pleasant. She was one of the best housekeepers I have ever had. Overall the rooms were comfortable. The beach was relaxing. The waiter Casandra by the terrace was always checking on us for drinks and brought fruit for our toddler. Will be visiting this resort in the future.

Need cleaning and improvements

Stay away! BED BUGS! Water from shower is leaking inside room. Hotel is in need of major renovation. Everything is old and broken. The bathtub drain is very slow and is leaking inside room if you use the shower more than 10 min. Everything smells as mold. Plenty of insects bites. Home I visited the Urgent Care department to find out that the bites are from bed bugs. Never again to stay at Catalonia La Romana!

Best Beach in D.R

Pros: The food and the Beach
Cons: The Air conditioning never really worked in our room despite we were in the priviledge side. The shower was dirty and the walls including the closets
Location: The location is perfect if you are looking for the best beach! Some shopping nearby and activities to do
Nice Hotel, good with the best beach in Dominican Republic!! The staff is cordial, respectful and the entertainers are Great!! This Hotel is a great option if you want to be in the Caribbean way better than Punta Cana!

Beach is great...

My booked room was outdated and dirty, water pressure low and took awhile to warm up. After i complained the second room was much better, room always cool, no prob with a/c, room was cleaned everday, refrigerator stocked with water, beer and soda. I had the garden view which was nice and quiet. Beach,pool,animation team, and 2 out of the 3 restaurant food was very good. Book the priviledged rooms I hear they're great. If you speak fluent Spanish or French this is the place for you, if not then goodluck with communicating with staff, only a few speak enough English, very frustrating.

We had a wonderful 5 days stay at the Catalonia! The facility it's beautiful! Very well kept! We signed up for privileged which gave us a room upgrade and access to private restaurants, bars and beach area! Awesome!

Beautiful beach and very nice staff, but

Beautiful beach and very nice staff, but room and common areas need updates. The food was ok and the pool does not seems to be very clean.

Great value

Seems like a new, up and coming resort that had a great atmosphere. It definitely skewed to the Spanish speaking guests in terms of entertainment (it's in the DR, so you should kind of expect that beforehand), but the vast majority of the staff speaks good English. The staff was all professional and courteous, dining options were good and the beach is very nice.

A disappointing experience

Pros: The beach and the water are fantastic.
Cons: THE HOTEL NEEDS TO BE REHABILITATED 100%.
Location: It is a MUST to go to Saona Island!
We spent 7 days and 6 nights at this hotel, 3rd of July thru 10th of July, 2017. It was far from what we expected in terms of hotel cleanliness and overall presentation. The premises are old and need a total rehabilitation. The bathrooms seem to fall apart, the water pressure in the shower was missing. The rooms were not cleaned properly, on a daily basis. 1/5 The food was very good at the buffet with a variety of foods and seafoods 4/5 However, do not have high expectations from the a-la-carte restaurants (3 of them) 3.5/5 The beach and the water are fantastic 4.8/5 The staff is very friendly and willing to help but seem impotent to make any change. The buildings are so worn out that the hotel really needs TO BE DEMOLISHED AND REBUILT. The concierge personnel, friendly as mentioned above, lacks professionalism and training. Overwhelmed by the travelers influx at times, they are slow to react and resolve simple issues. I find that the owners of the Catalonia consortium are the ones at fault. Of course, their market analysis and stats probably allows them to run this hotel on a thin line. Until something ugly happens and they become liable and taken to court. We will not go back until a new hotel is erected and sanitary conditions are safe. Make sure you read the reviews well and if people insist on room cleanliness, think twice before you book this hotel.
