Posted Oct 4, 2016
Pros: Nice renovation but not complete yet
Cons: See comment above
Location: Nice hike at Cuchara, and a nice cafe and bar,not much on La Veta
For the price of $140 I would expect breakfast, The owner is nice but it is a work in process There is no electric outlet in the bathroom nor a hook on the door to hang a robe..

Older structure, new owners

Posted Sep 26, 2016
Pros: Location and atmosphere.
Cons: Little by little the ageing structure will be spiffed up.
Location: Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival is to die for. 5 concerts in 4 days for everyone and classes in fiddle, flute, penny whistle, etc.
This older hotel has been taken over by a young couple with much enthusiasm. They will bend over backwards to accomodate you, but they are working with an older structure which is always more difficult. That said, the La Veta Inn is centrally located in the small town and also central to the larger gorgeous area of Spanish Peaks. I attended the Celtic Festival the 3rd week of September and could walk to all the classes.

Cons: The exterior of the hotel could use some help.
Location: Chuchara Pass, Trinidad museums, Ludlow Massacre Site, mining towns, San Luis Valley
The Inn is charming and each time we stay they have done more to renovate it. They still have more to go but what they have done is lovely. We were the only reservation at the time, though they got a couple of late night hunters that came in. Because there was no one there the dining room was not open and there was no decent eating place open on one of the nights. We love their courtyard and happily sit with our wine enjoying the quiet. We stayed in one of the historic rooms which was very nice. We did turn down the first room offered as all four walls were loudly painted with a mural done in primary colors but it seemed to be the only room that was a little odd in its decor. There is a limited amount to do in La Veta but we will still probably go back as it makes a nice get away. It is a good base for seeing the San Luis Valley and the history surrounding the mining towns in the hills between La Veta and Trinidad.

Certianly not a suite!

Posted Sep 5, 2014
The room was cute, but the bed was broken, there wasn't even tissue in the room. the towels had holes in them and didn't match, the 2nd day they didn't even leave a bathmat. the sheets had holes in them...the bed was soft and comfortable. the door jam had been repaired and you couldn't lock the dead bolt. the was a strong natural gas smell in the patio area. Apparently the owner isn't from this country and could care less about the hotel. the staff were very nice and tried to accomodate the guests

La Veta Inn

Posted May 19, 2014
Although we had confirmed reservations the Inn was not open when we arrived. Evidently closed without notice.

Pros: Quaint but nicely modernized
Location: We meet friends from Albuquerque, La Veta is about halfway
We have stayed at the La Veta Inn before and it's great! We drive down from the Boulder area and meet friends from Albuquerque. The town is small and quiet -- nice park across the street, several small shops and an art gallery, a lovely little bakery-coffee shop. It's a nice, relaxing place to stay. The La Veta Inn is quaint, nicely remodelled, our room was lovely. We enjoyed the bar and games room, and the dinner in the main dining room was the best! Highly recommend the rack of lamb. The staff are friendly, attentive, more than willing to accommodate requests. It's a lovely place to stay and we'll go back again and again.
