A gem with great history!

Posted Aug 22, 2016
Pros: The service, location and the history. Felt like walking back in time, so it was quite interesting and nice!
Cons: They can improve the amenites, such as larger TV's, more bathroom amenities like a hairdryer and a larger shelf or cabinet for personal items.
Location: The location was great, close walking distance to mirror lake and main street (?) of Lake Placid shops and restaurants.
The hotel is nicely decorated and cared for. The building and grounds were beautifully maintained and the service was very friendly and accommodating. There is no elevator for guests, so for those staying on floors above the 2nd (which is actually 3rd floor walking up) you have a bit of a climb. The rooms are a little small, but very clean and comfortable. The television in our room was very very small and difficult to watch, to be honest. It is evident they have done updates, beds seemed new and the bedding was comfortable and nice. Service was always with a smile, and the dinner we had in the restaurant on site (Redneck Bistro) was very good. The bathroom was small and showed it's age. There was a very small glass shelf above the sink/below the mirror but it was so small we couldn't keep any toiletries on it. It made it a bit of an inconvenience keeping all of our toiletries in our bags. There was also no hairdryer, although I guess we could have called downstairs to see if there was one available, but didn't bother to as we were there only two nights and the weather outside was warm, so didn't have to dry our hair. We tried the hot tub that is in the lower level, and it was quite nice - but it's closed in and rather dark. The room where the hot tub is located is very nice with wood (cedar?) panelling.

Staff was great, very friendly, flexible and accommodating. Hotel is old and charming with great amenities like gym, pool table, and best of all a hot tub, ideal after a long a strenuous hiking trip. Great, clean bathroom. The room, covers and sheets were clean but under the beds, especially the space close to the wall, was dusty. Thick wall to wall carpeting in the room and corridors. If you have allergies, you may want to reconsider. Nevertheless, we had a nice stay.

Hotel in Lake Placid

Posted Jul 30, 2016
The people who run the hotel are very nice. The adjacent restaurant is good, but not open every day. However, there were issues not to my liking: 1). There is no elevator and we were on the 2nd floor. For a person with arthritis or bad knees this is a problem. 2). The 5-minute walk to the town includes a very large hill. 3). We did not get maid service and had to request new towels and toilet paper which were not brought to the room. 4). There is no phone in the room with a way to call the front desk, so I had to keep looking up the number and using my cellphone to call the front desk. 5). The wireless connection within the hotel was poor. 6). We had to go down the 2 flights of stairs ourselves to get the supplies, which I thought should have been delivered.

Gemutlich with a capital G.

Pros: Friendly.
Cons: Please serve a Euro/German breakfast in your lovely front room.
Location: The Bear Restaurant is a great advise.
It's a great old school classic small hotel with terrific staff/owners. Easy walk to main street even when it's minus 22. It's pre hipster which is a requirment to be hip.

Unique hotel!

Great bed! Brand new temprapedic mattress and linens felt very rich. The room is small but perfect for me and my man. The bathroom was large; bathtub was double rimmed clawed foot. Very relaxing after climbing 16 mtn. miles. The only downfall is that there are no elevators. They had only four floors but after the weekend I had - I needed it!

Very Basic

This room is very basic, so if you just looking for a cheaper place to crash for the night and to shower in the morning, in a location close to downtown Placid, this is your place.
