Old World Charm

We had a delightful stay at the Hotel Avenida Palace, perfectly located adjacent to the train station, and just steps away from both the Chiado district and Barrio Alto. We had hoped to book a junior suite because it seems that the rooms can be on the smallish side, but none were available at the time of booking or as we monitored the hotels' availability leading up to our stay. However, I had sent an email to the hotel that if a junior suite became available we would like to change our reservations (and rate) to a junior suite. Not only did we receive a polite acknowledgment but when we checked in, we were told that while the hotel did not have a junior suite, we were being upgraded to the Presidential Suite at no charge. The suite was luxurious to say the least. Our home has double-height ceiling largely throughout and we probably could have stacked two of our floors into the vast vertical expanse of what framed at least 30+ foot windows. The antiques were authentic, the bed firm but comfortable and the aircon worked without a hitch during an extraordinarily hot spell in Lisbon. The public spaces are grand fin-de-ciecle salons, truly palatial, and while they may not be to everyone's liking, it is a hallmark of this landmark hotel. Staff were polite, although a little formal. This is about as elegant an experience as one can have in Lisbon, and the "Palace" lived up to its name in every way.
