Luna Park showing rides as well as a family

Melbourne’s iconic oceanfront amusement park mixes old-school charm and modern thrill rides to create the perfect family day out.

More than just an amusement park, Luna Park is a cultural institution located on the water’s edge of Port Phillip Bay in the suburb of St. Kilda. The park opened in 1912 and ever since has captivated visitors with its bright lights, colorful sideshows and exhilarating rides. Luna Park has long played a part in Melbourne’s history. During World War I, the park was largely shut down, but was spectacularly relaunched in 1923. When World War II struck, the park remained open but its bright lights were dimmed in the evenings as it was feared that its glow would make it an easy target for bombing raids. In the 1980s, the park lost one of its iconic roller coasters, the Big Dipper, to fire. Despite these setbacks, Luna Park remains an enduring testament to Melbourne's love of leisure and simple pleasures. Today Luna Park is a mix of heritage-listed attractions and modern, exhilarating rides. Climb aboard the Great Scenic Railway, the oldest continually operating roller coaster in the world. The ride goes around the entire perimeter of the park and offers great views over Port Phillip Bay and the surrounding suburbs. Buckle up on modern, high-tech rides like the Pharaoh’s Curse and G-Force, which will have your head spinning and heart racing. Less adventurous visitors and children can enjoy the gentler pace of the carousels and Ferris wheel.Luna Park is easily accessible by bus and tram. Two tram services leave from downtown Melbourne and stop directly outside. There is also plenty of metered street parking in the surrounding area. Entrance to the park is free but you have to pay for rides and sideshows. Unlimited ride passes for the entire day are available.Luna Park is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays. Because opening hours and days can vary it is essential to check the website before you visit. You can buy snacks inside the park, or bring your own food. Lockers are available for rent.
