graceful living

Posted Dec 3, 2017
Pros: There is nothing more I can add. It was one of the most successful stays I have ever had, and I am very glad that the old - new wing - has gone.
Cons: Having run a Gentlemen's Club for many years in St. James and following that a Liveryhall, in London as Chief Steward I know of the hard work involved
Location: When I travel, I breath the beauty of the country and its friendly people.I certainly found this to be the case in Egypt.
The Winter Palace evokes memories of old forgotten times, carried through to this century. Even though all modern gadgets are in place the old fashioned friendliness and helpfulness of the staff has a long way to to be beaten. Other than that, I lost a few days in hospital, but will make up for it, when I will definiritively return, hopefully at the beginning of next year. For some one, who has a real "wanderlust" and probably circumnavigated the globe many times this speaks for itself. Further more, I traveled with the first small group by Thomas Cook into Egypt in 1976 and had our lunch and sun downer at the Winter Palace, when I vowed, one day, I will be back again to enjoy its legendary hospitality. Fabulous hotel right on the Nile

Posted Nov 12, 2017
The Winter Palace is a truly magnificent piece of history with up to date service and a beautiful setting. I was bowled over by the attentive service, particularly at breakfast and around the pool. It made my holiday in Luxor and is worth the extra money to The Pavilions sharing the same grounds.

Luxury of a bygone era

Posted Nov 8, 2017
Staying in this hotel is like going back in time. High ceilings, huge chandeliers, handmade carpets, antique furniture and a grand marble staircase. You can imagine Agatha Christie writing Death on the Nile or Lord Carnarthan waiting for news of the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb. An absolute treat.

Old Workd luxury and servucez

The hotel ambiance is Old World elegance. Old architecture and furnishings. Loved it! Not for folks that are looking for modern style. The service is superb.

Excellent staff and stylish hotel.

Posted Aug 29, 2017 on Ebookers
Pros: The staff were attentive and helpful. The reception area and common areas were all beautiful .
Cons: A bar with a view over the Nile would have been wonderful. We ate in the Royal Bar one evening but dining options were limited. Room rather small.
Location: Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temples, Valley of the Queens. A host of antiquity. Balloon rides and Nile activities.S
Very welcoming and tours and taxis were easy to book. We had a room overlooking the garden, which was comfortable but on the small side. Good size bathroom , all very well air conditioned. A very stylish and palatial hotel.

Highly recommend this hotel

Posted Jul 18, 2017
Pros: See above
Cons: See above
Location: Prime location on the River Nile, walking distance to the Luxor Temple and a very short distance to the Karnak Temple.
It's a very old and historic hotel and I like that, but if you are looking for modern, not for you. Rooms are dated but so is the hotel. I was comfortable and only wished the satellite was tuned such that stations like BBC and CNN would have come in better. Tub in bathroom needed a good scrubbing but otherwise the room was clean. Staff was amazing. Very personal, very attentive, responsive and just a pleasure to be with. Some things need to be updated to cause less confusion. There are two restaurants inside hotel (and one by the pool). Signs at the two in hotel and in the hotel info in the room say both serve dinner but one has been serving only breakfast for some time now. Info in room says to use the phone follow instructions in the room but there are none. List of TV stations in the room was not accurate. But for me, all this was fairly minor stuff overshadowed by all the good stuff. I also would have liked a better wine list. Egyptian wines are just not very good. Pool and garden area is gorgeous and I would stay at this hotel again without hesitation.

Excellent old style hotel

Posted Apr 27, 2017
Pros: Old style service, rooms and atmosphere. The gardens are superb.
Cons: Not a lot, coat of paint on the outside.
Location: Central for Luxor easy to get across the Nile via the ferry or boats.
We have been fortunate to stay here before and at the now demolished new hotel and the pavilion wing. If you want modern facilities then do not stay here, stay in a soulless modern climate controlled box. Service at Breakfast was first class, same with the bar, we often ate in the evening ordering room service and had an excellent service. Worth the little extra to stay here rather than the Pavilion wing. Staying again in May.

All-time favorite hotel anywhere

Posted Apr 13, 2017 on Hotels
My wife and I had an adjoining room with our kids (ages 7 & 4) for our three night stay at the Sofitel Winter Palace. The hotel has done a great job of maintaining its historic character while still having it meet modern standards. Every member of the staff was friendly and helpful. I don't usually eat in hotels when I travel so that I have an opportunity to explore the local area but we had room service for dinner one night so that we could eat on our balcony overlooking the gardens and we had lunch at the pool one day because it was so relaxing. A trip to Luxor can be tiring between the heat, the volume of sites to see, the amount of touts trying to sell you things and the honking of the cabs. The Winter Palace is the perfect place to stay to recover from all of that.

In Luxor? Stay here.

Posted Apr 8, 2017 on Hotels
We stayed in a Nile-facing room. The service was excellent and the hotel offered choices where to eat. The location is excellent. The elevator is a bit sketchy, however. Being historic, some may see it as a bit shop-worn, but we saw it as a grand dame among hotels. The grounds and pool were beautiful. There was very little road noise in the Nile rooms. The restaurants were very good and the wait staff invariably polite and solicitous. I hope we return some day and if so, we will return to the Winter Palace. Some say it is living in the past, but it's past makes the present all the more elegant.
