The rooms are outdated, restaurants are not good, neighborhood is sketchy. Overall bad experience and I would not stay here again.

Great location with a picture perfect view.

Posted Mar 3, 2016
Pros: Location. View. Cleanliness. Personality of staff.
Cons: The dinner restaurant on the lower ground floor was pretty poor. The breakfast on the other hands was great!
Location: Luxor Temple. Karnak Temple. Valley of the Kings. Temple of Hatshepsut. Balloon Tours.
Luxor is unfortunately having a bit of a rough time of it following a decline in tourist numbers after the revolution. However, the Sonesta St George manages to keep a smile on its face with charming staff and an unrivalled view of the Nile in the city. It is quite a grand place for a price suggesting a more budget hotel, which was a pleasant surprise. You are met by a lavish entrance hall with crystal chandeliers and gold decor. Although a bit more, it is well worth getting a Front Nile view. The view across to the Theban Mountains is spectacular. The rooms were clean and well kept, but Egyptian hotels, or the ones I have experienced anyway, don't always pay attention to the difference between a Kind Bed and a twin room. We were told all the Front Nile View rooms only had twins but were more than happy to push the beds together and remake them. Location wise, it is only a 10 minute walk to Luxor Temple, but I would recommend getting a cab as the lack of tourism has made the horse and cart drivers more pushy than usual. Also, the infrastructure in the city is in decline.

Disappointing

Posted Feb 3, 2016
Pros: Clean, restaurant people were very nice. Good location.
Cons: Front desk staff. Heat would be good. If you are paying for a street facing room on Expedia they should tell you.
Location: Walking distance to the Luxor Temple and Luxor Museum.
The hotel was at least 50 percent empty but they put me on a 3rd floor room facing a busy street where there was construction. I asked to be moved. They said they would move me but it would cost more. I finally pointed out that I had paid for a king size room online and the room they put me in had twin beds so they begrudgingly moved me in a few rooms. A little quieter but not much. There is also no heat in the hotel. I Luxor in January, nights get down to about 45 so it was chilly for sure. The restaurant staff were all very nice but the front desk staff was horrible. I asked for a room change- refused. I asked to break 100 pound note into smaller bills-refused. I asked if they had a newspaper that I could have or purchase so I could pack a few gifts-refused. Don't waste your money on this hotel.

Thank you for writing this review, we are happy you enjoyed the location and the restaurants. As for the rooms you wanted to change, I am sure you know we have several categories and each category has a different rate, that is why maybe the reception people asked you for a cost difference, but be sure we always do our best to satisfy our guest. Please accept our apology for any inconvenience that you may have faced during your stay

Decent Hotel

Posted Jan 26, 2016
Pros: Decent location, nice feel about it. We only stayed 1 night - the check in was a very bad experience. The next day they apologised about it.
Cons: Front Desk staff need to be empowered to take care of the client.
Feels like you're stuck in the 90s in this hotel- but that seems to be a common theme in Egypt, understandably so given how much tourism has declined. Front desk staff were not very helpful - finally got them to give us a room in the back (we didn't care about the view, just wanted the quiet side) - they told us the room was non-smoking - as we had requested - I get in there and ther are 2 ashtrays. There is no water in the room, no wifi (in lobby only, in room wifi is payable), and no coffee/tea facilities (you can request this for i think $35USd/week!?!?!?!?! Crazy pricing!

Thank you for writing this review, we are happy you liked the location and sorry about the bad check - in regarding the internet , we get it with high prices from the provider so it is only free in the lobby area. The tea and coffee facilities are free in the superior rooms not the standard room , you can request only for 5$ a day. Thank you again for your comments and see you soon at our hotel . Regards from Luxor

The hotel is OK, somewhat dated.

Posted Jan 2, 2016
Location: great view of the Nile.
My experience at the hotel is somewhat OK, i only stayed there one night. the hotel is somewhat dated and should not be listed as 5-star. the location is not the greatest, it is a bit far from the center of the city. the food at the restaurant is very expensive considering the fact we were in Luxor Egypt not Toronto or New York.

Pros: The rooms and the staff
Cons: Seeing as the hotel was so quiet an upgrade from side nile 2 front of river room would have been nice
Location: A few restaurant close 2 hotel and a nice even if it was small convenience store across the road for water and snacks Taxis are cheap and plenty
Beautiful hotel on the nile river. Staff were lovely.breakfast was ok a A little limited for a buffet breakfast but could have eggs freshly made anyway u like Rooms were nice, clean and big and beds were very comfortable Room service meals nice and cheap compared to OZ.Unfortunately very few people were around Maybe a dozen all up It is the quiet season but also with the conflict We are a family and at no time did we feel unsafe and the local people were just so happy 2 see us and nearly all the people we saw said to us welcome 2 Egypt and thanked us for coming

Hotel is nice but on noisy street

Posted Apr 4, 2015
Pros: Facilities
Cons: Improve the fluency of staff to speak English
Location: Not much to do in the area where the hotel is located
Enjoyed the hotel. Staff are not fluent in English. The hotel does not offer any tour options. Ask for a room facing the back of the hotel because front facing rooms are extremely noisy. Sound proofing of the windows is not effective.

Nice hotel in the heart of the city

Posted Feb 25, 2015
Pros: ,felt safe and very welcome by pleasant staff. They arranged for early check in without any extra charge with breakfast!!!.
Cons: Dusty room, need to be cleaned.no kettle in the rooms, for a star hotel that is needed.
Location: Very close to luxor and Karnak temples.
I was with my two adolescent children, felt safe and very welcome by pleasant staff. They arranged for early check in without any extra charge with breakfast!!!. The staff were always around without being intrusive. There were lot of tourist who said they return here every year due to reasonable rates and excellent dedicated staff . The room was smaller and bit dusty , and they immediately arranged for some one to tidy it up. I will stay here next time.

Comfortable Hotel with Nile views!

Posted Jan 29, 2015
Pros: The friendly staff. The comfort. Its location. The view is fabulous especially at sunset on the Southern side of the hotel. Front rooms are wonderful.
Cons: There seemed to be an ongoing team of maintenance and garden workers attending to the hotel constantly so it would be petty to complain.
Location: The hotel is on the edge of the town. There are a number of good restaurants nearby within walking distance. Kalesh and Taxi's are outside the door.
A fortnight at any hotel can take its toll. By Day 10, you're missing coffee the way you make it yourself and would love a soft poached egg. There are though plenty of options provided by the breakfast buffet and the coffee is bearable and there's plenty to fill up on to start a Luxor day. Energy is needed in Luxor. Energy, understanding and a sense of humour so a good breakfast is a bonus. You get a good breakfast at the Sonesta and great service. The rooms are comfortable with many having Nile views. We shared a King sized bed which was extremely comfortable. There was plenty of hanging space and ample drawers. Sheets are changed daily although one can insist on the more environmental option of using the same sheets which we did. The pool is clean and the pool attendants very efficient. The same goes for the waiting staff poolside. The female waitress is very efficient and looks after the guests well. A mezze plate for lunch can feed two people. The restaurants are varied. We ate at the Italian restaurant on one occasion and it was of a good standard. The Japanese restaurant wasn't as good and the food, although tasty wasn't authentic. Nothing to complain about though as it was adequate. Room service was good. The St George Burger is highly recommended. The internet in the foyer is free and is intermittent in it's efficiency. It did work more often than not. The hotel is decorated in Egyptian style using marble and granite. It's very attractive. I would certainly return.
