Great modern house in Machico
We were given a great welcome by the owner at his excellent restaurant "O Pescador", after which he drove us to the house, showing us nearby supermarkets and bus station en route. He showed us the house facilities (importantly including the Wi-Fi code) then left us with the key to enjoy our holiday. The house is spacious and fitted out to a high standard, appreciated by all the family as a base for our trips around Madeira. Checkout was very relaxed, just leaving the key on departure (we were able to stay till 12:00 on our last day). Unexpected benefits: 4 toilets (very handy when you're all heading out), excellent shower in main bathroom, bath and shower en-suite to master bedroom, washing machine, views over Machico. The TV has some English channels and there is a large fridge-freezer. For cooking there is a gas hob, electric oven, microwave and sandwich toaster. If we had a hire car we would have liked the integral garage. The house is up a hill, so you get good views and exercise carrying shopping up the steep hill from the supermarket (taxi is the easy way up!). We recommend taxi tours of the island and 4x4 tours. Taxi transfer from airport about 12euro and 5-10mins. Bus to Funchal 6euro and 25-50mins depending on whether express route. From the house 10-15mins walk to beach, or there is a 1 hour (there and back) walk up the hill to an even better viewpoint. Supermarket at bottom of hill open every day 8am-10pm. Smaller one half way is cash only.
Pros: Modern, spacious, very nice, good facilities.
Cons: Houses of this standard often have a dishwasher, but it's fine without.
Location: Machico is much closer to Funchal airport than Funchal itself is. It has one of the three sandy beaches on Madeira. Take trips to Funchal and elsewher
