Check -In was long. Didn't get the ocean view I booked because I had a dog. Hotel is a mix of apartment tenants and visitors between 3 different buildings. I had to stay in Building A and park in Building B. Had a maze to get from building A to B. Elevator did not go garage. Very tiring.

The position the hotel so close to the spectacular coastline was great. We were in Block B on the sixth floor in a sea view apartment. It was really spacious and very clean and modern. Watch the sun go down was amazing. Breakfast was varied and plentiful. Bring on holiday a 10 am slot was perfect for us. The pool was clean and never too busy and we could always get the beds we needed. Local restaurants were great and cocktails at the end of the night in the hotel bar were a great way to relax. The staff were really friendly and helpful both at breakfast and reception. It’s a good 40 min walk into Funchal centre which we found no problem as the views were fab. The regular buses - right outside the hotel were frequent and only a couple of euros. The aero bus was only 5 euros and a lot cheaper than getting a cab. Also just outside hotel. I would highly recommend the Golden residence.

In a great location if looking for somewhere a bit quieter but still with amenities in walking distance. Block C is the most convenient for the pool, bars and breakfast. Lovely stay and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

4-star location + buffet, 3-star rooms + service
Pros: 1. Location allows for nice sunsets 2. Breakfast buffet is good Cons: 1. Rooms are quite dated and not reflective of what a 4 star hotel should provide 2. Service can leave you feeling unappreciated 3. Shower randomly changes temperature from comfortable to scalding 4. The resistance training options in the gym are quite poor, even by hotel gym standards

We enjoyed staying at golden residence. Location was great, breakfast bar with lots of different options available, housekeeping was excellent. Although recenption staff were friendly they wouldn’t provide any information unless you ask them and I think hotel is missing some kids entertainment when we had heavy rainy days.

This place would be five stars, but had a couple of issues that knocked it down to four. The 11 days we were there the room air conditioner was not working. It was never mentioned at check in, but we were told about it after asking questions about how the AC works. The other issue is noise. With no A/C you have to leave the window open. There was a lot of construction noise from various properties that are being built around it. There was also a lot of noise from dogs barking in the building next door to the Golden Residence. Other than that, this would be a good place to stay.

Everything is good, staffs are helpful. My 1st room was at the top floor (sea view)and you can felt the heat like the sauna room but they gave me a small fan for my 1st night because they said they are still fixing their air conditioning. I couldn't sleep that night even though the balcony door and wundows were opened. My room just facing the main road and the traffic woke me up at 5am. They agreed to change a room for me which facing another side (partial sea view). I don't like the old lady receptionist said that the others who stsyed at the top floor like me have no complaint at all. It showed that i sm the only one who complaint to them. Excuse me, I am not them, I paid for my entitlement,your hotel clearly stated that with air conditioning and that'swhy i paid more for this. No air conditioning with 26*and sorry i can not sleep with this heat! She was "trying" to be nice to me but i can felt her " rudeness".I asked her where's how to go to the beach and she just said "go up there and turn left and you'll see"but my family and I had been walked for 15 mins still cant find the beach and i have to use my google maps to help (a small narrow way which you will not notice). But other staffs were very nice and friedly. The hotel is provided breakfast and i have read many reviews said their breakfast is nice,yes but almost every day are the same. I like this hotel a lot but I wont stay during the summer holidays until they have fix their air conditioning.

Staff is extraordinarily helpful, breakfast buffet has terrific variety, and spa service was very good. I lost a rental car key and the staff helped me call the car company and a tow truck service. Above and beyond! Highly recommend a visit to this hotel.

Great hotel but needs better management.
The hotel is ideally located to local amenities. The rooms were very clean and large. However, we had to remove a cockroach from the room once. The breakfast had limited hot food choices for vegetarians at times. The only area where we were not please was that certain facilities were time based only. Steam, sauna and Jacuzzi were only switched on between 5pm - 9pm. Quite often they didn't work well either. We also had to book a breakfast slot for each day.

Dear Guest,Being Madeira so beautiful with much to do – most of our guests are back to the hotel at the end of the day – reason why we only switch the sauna and Turkish bath at 17h.Please note that theses services are free – as well as our jacuzzi and indoor pool - which are available all day long and on free basis as well.The idea of having slots for breakfast is to make sure you that guests do not have to wait for table or have too many people at the same time by the beautiful and varied buffet.We sincerely hope that you consider the Golden Residence Hotel for your next holidays.

We really enjoyed our stay here, as two young adults who wanted to get out and explore the nature of the island! We had a car, which was great considering this property is a little outside downtown Funchal. Underground parking for small fee. Grocery store near by, the fridge and small kitchen was a plus. We stayed in 2 different rooms and had beautiful views in each, building A and B. Breakfast was great, they even had made to order omelets a couple of the days! Highly recommend golden residence, great value for price too. Would definitely stay again.

Our room was not what was described on our booking. We had paid for a balcony with an ocean view, but instead, it was overlooking a surrounding street. The staff were friendly and the area was very safe. Food also a significant letdown.

We had a great stay at the Golden Residence. Breakfast buffet was very nice. The best part was the sunset out on the terrace. Shopping mall very close to the hotel was a bonus - lots of great shopping and it included a grocery store too.

Amazing quiet hotel with superb location and views
This is a really nice hotel, this is the second time we have stayed here and with all the hotels to choose from that tells something. We were a bit nervous reading some other reviews, if covid restrictions would make it a less enjoyable, but this was not case. The hotel was nice and clean and we had to wear face masks around the hotel which was the only ‘inconvenience’ we encountered. The food at the hotel is still a fully stocked buffet, which at breakfast has an amazing selection of hot and cold items which varied from day to day. We only tried their evening buffet once which we felt was not worth the money due to the limited selection there was very little hot food (2-3 choices) and this was the same as last time we were there. The rooms are nice and big and suits must type of travel styles as it has a little kitchen, seating area, loads of wardrobe space, room to move and a balcony. The staff here is amazing and always helpful and friendly with whatever questions you may have. The hotel itself is nicely located it’s in a very quiet and peaceful area, but also has loads of restaurants within 15 min walking distance in almost any direction. And if you go up and take the number 1 bus you are in the marina part of Funchal in less than 20 min. The only little minus I would say this hotel has is that it needs a bit of paint we had a fair bit of scuff marks on the walls and rust is starting to show which makes it look more tired than it is. But overall I can only recommend.

Had the pleasure of staying in this lovely hotel. It's very clean and modern, you won't be disappointed. The small negatives, unusual layout with 3 blocks, means you'll have a fair amount of walking and a road to cross, single use plastic gloves (temporary due to covid) for meals impact eco-friendliness, small distance from main strip (7 euro cab), indoor pool was closed during our stay (refurbishment), gym equipment could do with updating and main sea views are in C block. But these are tiny gripes, the staff were lovely and patient. views from the pool area gorgeous. Definately more of a family or group vibe, but quiet enough for a romantic getaway. Breakfasts were good, with varied choices, impeccably clean and modern throughout. There is a local shopping centre with most things you may need. I would definately recommend it and stay there again. This hotel was awesome value and a great launch point.

Lovely hotel on a lovely island
This hotel is simple, clean & modern. I'd stay here again! It is big so the walk to the pool & breakfast can take a little while from block A, we found the stairs though so no issues for us. The gym is adequate, the range of dumbbell weights in particular allow for a fairly good workout. The outdoor pool is a good size with a fair amount of loungers. The breakfast is great! Poolside drinks are pretty reasonable & the staff are friendly. We had a few minor issues but the staff sorted these quickly. The spa & indoor pool are currently closed, massages are still available but they are not in the spa, if you book massage make sure to ask where it will be! Parking is 5 Euros per night but there is plenty of on street parking close to the hotel so we didn't pay for parking at all during our stay. My husband and I did a mix of hiking & relaxing by the pool, it felt great being away in 2021 & I wish we'd stayed longer.

Lovely hotel on the cliffs with beautiful swimming pool and views. Easy access down to the beach that has footpath that leeds all the way to Lobos (hour walk). Location is good, you can walk to Old Town (about an hour) or take the bus that stops right outside the hotel (15mins). Service was good. Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall no complaints.

Nice hotel. Friendly, helpful staff. Good location. Usual hotel breakfast, which could have been a bit hotter but otherwise good choice. Didn't have any other food at the hotel so can't comment. Went during Covid pandemic so probably not as much going on as might usually have been but staff definitely aware of covid procedures and protecting from transmission.

Moved to the Melia Madeira Mare Hotel CLOSED!!!!
We were moved to The Melia Madeira Mare Hotel, the beds were like slabs of concrete as were the pillows. I left with my children at 2am as we could not sleep. It was their Birthday treat, an we are all so disappointed. There were no English TV channels for the children so we went to the games room which was in the dark. I had to then go and find someone to switch on the lights, and this hotel was meant to be an upgrade, it wasnt. I have stayed in the Golden residence before and there was no comparison. The hotel was depressing with no atmosphere. There was nothing around the location, I booked the Golden residence because the Shopping Centre is literally across the road and has a Cinema. We were approx 2.5 km away.

Clean, family friendly hotel. Accessible by bus that stops right outside, uber is cheap though. Mall and resturants near by. Spacious room - we had serviced apartment room, that was cleaned every day and beds made, had mini kitchenette with fridge. Good breakfast buffet. Although the resturant menu is useless and expensive. Staff are brilliant and friendly. We went in Feb2020, weather was good but a light jacket is needed in evening. No washing machine facility, only paid drycleaning. Building can probably do with a cosmetic/redeco upgrade. Indoor pool area is not big, one medium Jacuzzi probably 4 adults will fit. We didnt use outdoor pool, but it is good size and would be fun in summer. A high 3+, not 4*. BUT good for families with children, who would rather prefer a friendly hotel to a posh one.
