Faded grandeur; magnificent views, great location

Posted Nov 30, 2016
Pros: Location, views, unpretentiousness, the air of past grandeur, the historical photos in the corridors, the books, wifi, reasonable price
Cons: Real fruit juice at the breakfast buffet!
Location: 3 mins away is a nice museum, Quinta des Cruzes. 6 mins away is the British Cemetary (containing graves of people of lots of different nationalities)
I liked this hotel and would definitely stay again. It is in an imposing building which was undoubtedly once rather grand, but the fittings and furnishings are no longer matchingly luxurious, though everything is basically clean and tidy and functions as it should. The breakfast buffet has an adequate choice of items and there is plenty - I made a very hearty breakfast every day. The terrace at the front is terrific, and there's a common room on the first floor that also has great views. (As does the pool.) The staff are unassuming but helpful. Wifi is available in the public areas downstairs (including terrace), and for bookworms there are probably a hundred or so books in the bookcases downstairs and in the common room in a variety of languages (Scandinavian languages being over-represented for some reason). The walk to the seafront (where the main part of town is) is about 15 minutes, though it's uphill all the way back. I didn't find it exceptionally steep but anyone with mobility problems or who is extremely unfit or very obese might find the last 60% of it a bit demanding.

Great views, lovely staff

Posted May 31, 2016
Pros: The staff were polite and helpful, everything was clean, views were great, hotel has a lot of character.
Location: Its about a 10 min walk down hill from the centre of Funchal but there are shops and restaurants closer.
Spent a week at is hotel and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is old fashioned and has a lot of character and the views over the city were great. Rooms were simple but big, bright and well ventilated. Will definitely stay here again when I come back to Madeira.

Exceptional hotel with view of Funchal at night

Posted Sep 26, 2015
Pros: Location
Cons: Better breakfast. Appalling service from Expedia despite hours on the phone to people with poor English
Location: You have do d some research but there are many worthwhile visits including gardens and museums
This hotel is adequate but basic. It's unbeatable advantage is that it has a patio with a wonderful view of Funchal, especially at night. We have been back 5 times just for this

Lovely hill side hotel near town centre

Posted Apr 22, 2015
Had a pleasant time at this hotel. The hotel was really conveniently located, with a great view. The room was a bit old and small but kept quite clean.

Hotel with character

Posted Apr 16, 2015
Pros: The staff, the view, the breakfast, the style of the hotel - lovely woodwork and interesting items on display. Nice pool - also with view.
Cons: Bed was uncomfortable, and the wifi was very slow and only available in public areas. A better indoor sitting area would be helpful.
Location: Ten minutes brisk uphill walk from the centre of Funchal, but that puts it in walking distance of everything you need.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Staff were extremely helpful, and the terrace overlooking Funchal is a delight.

Lovely historic hotel, close to town, great value

Posted Apr 13, 2015
Pros: Pretty much everything.
Cons: Not much for the money.
Location: Great location all of Funchal is at your fingertips: parking enables great base for exploring the island. Could be difficult to find for newcomers.
Lovely art deco hotel, mercifully away from the 'hotel zone' and close to town, great value, great sun terrace (best, views in Funchal), bar, some private parking, superb staff. A really quirky 'old fashioned' hotel with lovely period detailing, great sun terrace, rooftop pool and surrounded by relaxed planting. Really close to town (but steep; but isn't all Funchal?) very near convent and three major museums. Staff are lovely, helpful and accommodating, clean and tidy with good rooms with en-suite; basic but hearty continental breakfast; really good base for exploring the island. Great value!!

Old simple but comfortable

Posted Mar 9, 2015
Pros: Old world like charm.
Cons: Updating would lend to the ambiance.
Location: Situated on a steep hill but it has things to do around it and decent eateries.
This hotel is up a steep hill but most things are in Madeira. The hotel is functional but dated but the staff where very pleasant and there is a homely and friendly feel. which is absent in the ultra modern places that have an attitude about their status.
