A terrific choice for a tourist in Madrid
Posted Nov 30, 2016
We stayed three weeks in this 6-story tourist hotel and loved it in spite of the street's noisy nightlife. (You might like to ask for a room off the street.) Puerta del Sol is a vibrant square in the heart of Madrid, with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and the city's largest department store, "El Corte Ingles." There's a Metro station AND a Cercanias station, the suburban rapid transit system. (From the airport, take Cercanias line C1 to Chamartin Station, then C3 or C4 southbound to Sol. It's easier than the Metro, and cheaper.) From the hotel it's a 15-minute walk west to the royal palace, or east to the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza art galleries. The Petit Palace Puerta del Sol is one of several Petit Palace hotels in the immediate area. We had a good-sized room by European standards, with a modern bathroom, excellent maid service, and a couple of English-language news channels in the TV lineup. Also important: an elevator! The nearby El Corte Ingles has a well-priced cafeteria on its top (7th) floor, and a supermarket in the basement (-1) floor. We enjoyed daily pastry-and-coffee breakfasts on the upper floor of the popular La Mallorquina cafe at the west end of Puerta del Sol, very close to our hotel. Highly recommended.
