beautiful hotel across from Parque de Retiro.

Madrid is spectacular; food, sangria, and Flamenco!!! No humidity; but hot in August--bring good walking shoes and a hat :),locals are dressier than Americans; we enjoyed wearing our "nicer" summer clothes. Most Spaniards are on holiday in August; so we found shops and restaurants open & less crowded than expected. We ate and walked (!!) our way through this beautiful, clean city with 2 sons (12 &16) who also loved the history, food (Jamon Iberico sandwiches esp) and sites. Many beautiful Cathedrals in every city. In Madrid, we toured the Atletico Soccer stadium, Museo Prado, Palacio, Museo de Sorollo (a must!) and took train-rides to Salamanca, Segovia, and Toledo with its crazy small streets & shops. Half hour car ride with local friends to see El Escorial, which is awesome; you have to eat at their "cafeteria" where you can also stay for a quiet and old fashioned overnight/weekend retreat. The Petit Palace is a wonderful hotel across from Parque de Retiro and within walking distance to restaurants, Museo de Prado, & Ritz. Free bike rental a plus and always fresh cold water and friendly hotel staff to greet us and guide us to local places. Location is a quick cab ride to Rastro Fair (Sundays), Plaza de Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel for a delicious meal, and Hernanz, which is oldest place to buy hand made espadrilles. Local friends advised not to tip the usual 15-20% and instead only 1-2%. It feels weird, but it is customary and we quickly got used to it
