Stock up on local specialties and foods from around the world amid the art nouveau surrounds of this huge indoor market.

Search for gourmet specialties, sample some exotic spices and buy freshly cut flowers at Market Hall, one of Stuttgart’s most famous markets. Behind the striking façade of a large art nouveau building there are stalls and shops sprawled over two floors.

The market first opened its doors in 1914 and occupies the site of a previous vegetable warehouse building. War damage and wear and tear have led to a number of renovations over the years, with the last major revamp taking place in 2004.

Wander through the first floor retail space. Look at stalls selling everything from game, poultry and fresh fruit, to flowers, baked goods and specialties from countries such as Serbia, Iran, India, Greece and Turkey. Savor the smells and taste free food samples at some of the stands.

Go up to the second floor for shops selling home accessories, teas, coffees, art and jewelry. Look down on the lively first floor scenes of buying and selling from the viewing gallery. Admire the vast glass ceiling that spans the hall. Give yourself at least a couple of hours to see what’s on offer throughout the markets.

Enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants on the second floor. There are Italian and Mediterranean dishes and a restaurant serving Swabian cuisine. Try some of the regional specialties including stews, soups and Spätzle, a type of egg noodle. Alternatively, dine on the outdoor terrace of the first floor Spanish tapas bar.

The market is open from Monday to Saturday from early morning until evening. Learn more about the history of the building and venture down into the basement storage areas with a guided tour. They are conducted in German for a fee. Tours in English for groups can be arranged ahead of time. Visit Market Hall’s website for more information.

Market Hall is located in the center of Stuttgart between Market Square and Charles Square and is easily reached by public transportation. There is a metered car parking garage in front of the market building.
