Expedia couldn't cancel bad reservation

I originally booked the hotel for the previous night by mistake. I called Expedia the next morning to change the reservation and see if they could only charge me for the one night. They originally said they could, but then said because the hotel was in Oregon (or out of state which makes no sense), they couldn't reverse the charges.
So, I paid for 2 nights instead of 1. The hotel was quite nice for the price (of one night), but the Expedia explanation of why they couldn't reverse the initial reservation charge was confusing.
