First time staying here and unfortunately was a frustrating experience. Start with the good - maids were friendly and effective in keeping the place clean. We checked in on a Wednesday and out on Saturday. Breakfast nook quaint and OK with basic options (bagels/toast, hard-boiled eggs, muffins/pastries, apples/oranges, yogurt, cheerios/Raisin Bran, coffee but nothing other than cold water for kids). Now for the frustrating - on day 1 we informed the front desk the tv was not working. They had no ideas but said they would get back to us. I proceeded to check in each morning/evening before/after our day’s activities. I was told repeatedly they would talk to a manager. Long story short, they NEVER fixed or even FOLLOWED UP with an update. There is no maintenance person onsite and the nice girls that work the front desk really had no idea how to help drive to a solution. I didn’t expect them to be able to provide tech support personally, but at least contact someone who could. Just very poor customer service. Two other things to note. 1- After checking in and seeing our room had no tub (just a walk-in shower) I asked if there was another room we could switch to that would be better for our small child. Answer: “None of our rooms have tubs.” 2 - The heater in our room was one of the older baseboard radiant heaters (not a problem by itself). Unfortunately it was located right behind a bed headboard (literally touching it) which felt unsafe and tough to sleep .

Beautiful rooms with a lot of personality! Within walking distance to a lot tourist attractions. The beds were really comfortable and the fireplace added a lot of coziness. I do not recommend driving a large vehicle because the parking was a little bit of a challenge. The continental breakfast was not the greatest but definitely not a game changer for myself.

The property itself is very nice. It was clean, and the staff was friendly. The major issue was no access to a front desk or employee. The empty room next to use had an alarm that went off at 5:55AM, and there was no way to find someone to enter and turn it off. We ended up getting up and leaving to get away from the noise. I did call the number listed, and left a message, and never heard anything regarding it. We never get to sleep in, so it was tremendously disappointing to be awoken so early with no solution. I realize it is a fluke situation, but it ruined an expensive night away.

Did not like anything about this property. The room we stayed in had a broken toilet and leaked all over our belongings and we didn’t stay because our clothes were soiled by dirty toilet water. We checked in at 1pm went to Monterey bay aquarium all day returned around 5:30 used the toilet once and it had a major leak and we left at 7pm. Worst hotel I have ever stayed at.

The staff were pleasant and helpful. The location is great, near many restaurants and walkable. Our room was cute but the bathroom did have ants and the toilet got plugged up. Staff brought a plunger right away but plumbing seems older. Just a few little things that aren’t deal breakers. We did miss having a pool and spa to use, so we will likely stay at the Portola again in the future like we usually do.

The bed, linens, and pillows were very comfortable. The location is very walkable to the wharf and if you are into longer jaunts down to cannery row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We logged 15,000 steps in one day! The building is not what is pictured in the photographs- the majority of rooms are in buildings around the original Merritt House. The vaulted ceilings and fireplace were awesome. However, the room smells of the chemicals from the prefab logs they give you. Be aware there is not an elevator so you will need to lug your bags up two short flights of stairs to get to the second story.

QUIET CLEAN LITTLE HOTEL
This little hotel is a close walking distance to the wharf and various businesses, including a great crepe restaurant less than 2 blocks way. The service was excellent and staff was very friendly. Super clean, with a quaint little breakfast room, filled with pastries and various easy food items.... If you want old style, this is the place.. Small, cozy, and even had a nice fireplace.

This historic landmark hotel is very charming! We stayed on the second floor in 2 rooms, there were cathedral ceilings and working fireplaces in the room with double French doors onto a balcony overlooking a beautiful small courtyard. The room was immaculate, the decor cute and brand new. Tiles, counters and fixtures all quality and brand new. Smelled great no mildews smell. The included breakfast was convenient, the parking was a bit tight for our minivan rental but again super convenient.

Very cute and quaint inn, feels very homey and the rooms have high ceilings and immaculate bathroom/shower area. Just unfortunate that the walls are paper thin, both nights I stayed at room 15, I was woken up by my neighbors.

Great rooms, great location.
What a great place to stay. Rooms were really great much bigger than expected. Our room had a fireplace and they give you a complimentary log to burn. The location is also great. 5 minute walk to tons of restaurants, coffee shops and the warf. Bonus that it’s a very nice older place with history. Next time I’m in the area I’ll stay here again for sure!

We really enjoy staying at the Merritt House (our third time). It is convenient (walkable) to almost everything in Monterey. The historic adobe and garden at the center of the hotel property is a cool feature, too - stay in it, if you can! The other rooms are all nice, well decorated, and comfortable. I recommend an upstairs room with vaulted ceilings. Very convenient to have breakfast on offer and the staff are all lovely and helpful. We'll be back!

I really liked what they had advertised and didn’t mind paying a little extra for the convenience to the conference center, but what was delivered didn’t meet expectations. When I arrived the heat was on in the room, which was set to the max temperature, meaning the room temperature was over 80 degrees. There were no windows to open and the only option was to leave the front door open. I did discover a fan in the closet the next morning, but not after spending a restless night sweating it out. Soap, shampoo and conditioner dispensers were unmarked in the shower, so I ended up washing my hair with body wash. No biggie, it just would have been nice to know.

I love this boutique hotel. I stay here every November when I attend a conference. The rooms are nice and the suites are adorable with a nicely decorated living room with a fireplace and complementary fire log. The bathroom vanity area is spacious and the bathroom & shower are nicely decorated a very clean. The only downside is the parking. It is very limited and the spots are tiny. The first time I stayed there I went to check and my mid-sized vehicle was blocked in because someone parked a large vehicle in a designated spot behind me and there was no room to back out. I had to leave my car there and come back for it later. Now, I always check in early so I can get a good spot and then I take a Lyft everywhere.

The hotel was nice with a good location. And cute rooms but they were poorly cleaned with past guests things still in the room. Then the alarm clock went off at 3 am and woke up the whole family even though we didn't touch it.

It was quaint, staff was friendly, rooms were clean. My only complaint is there is no one at the front desk at night. I was given a log for the fireplace and told to use the matches in my room. There were no matches. Also some guests were super loud after midnight. There was no one to call for help.

We were really pleasantly surprised with Merritt House. We would definitely return. We stayed here for a conference at the Marriott so this was a more convenient and priced-right option for the meeting. The room was very comfortable, clean and cozy. Highly recommend a quick 10 min walk to the Old Fisherman's Wharf.

The staff at Merritt House is top notch. From the front desk to housekeeping, all were extremely friendly and accommodating. Everything Monterey has to offer is accessible from this property. The room was decorated well and super clean. I will definitely stay here again!

Wonderful front desk person with all kinds of suggestions. Loved our stay there. Thought we would probably go out for breakfast due to my gluten free requirement but found it wasn’t necessary. Breakfast, although continental, had plenty of choices (including yogurt and oatmeal.)

We liked the location. friendly staff, nice continental breakfast.They may not need AC in the room but it needs out side air to come in. the room gets stuffy. If you decide to open the double door to the balcony it is a common balcony to 4 other rooms. We did not feel full privacy with the blinds and thin curtins. We figure there is a give and take. Will we go back? Possibilities are still there. They do have a fire place and they supply the log. and they do have a heater for cold times.
