You can't beat the access to the beach...

Posted Jan 13, 2017
Cons: Communication among staff and fast response to things like "we can't get into our room..."
While there were a few communication problems with issues at first; we couldn't get into room using key yet no one came and we had to go back to the lobby, no coffee in the room, no response when we called about the heater even though we were told maintenance would be there immediately ( a very sweet housekeeper helped us with the trick door). Once we solved these issues everything else was great. It was very clean and comfortable in the rooms once we figured out the heater. The staff was very friendly and helpful, it just seemed as though perhaps they were over-worked or understaffed for winter break. That being said, the hotel is in a lovely spot, has beautiful romantic views in the lobby with couches where you can sit and gaze at the waves, a wonderful beach with outside seating and even bonfires if you'd like. We got 'garden view' with no true garden, but so easy to walk around the corner to the great view of the beach and access. The hotel was very easy to get to, easy parking, and easy to get to both Monterey and Carmel (however traffic in both places was intense!) I'd go back.

Hell Carin, Thank you for your great review. I was so happy to read that you loved the view and location and that our staff were friendly. However I was concerned to see that you had some initial problems with the room and room keys. I would like to sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. On a lighter note I am glad that the team were able to resolve your issues. Thank you once again for your feedback and I hope to be able to welcome you back to Monterey Tides in the near future. Kind Regards, William

Hotel not as described at all

Posted Dec 31, 2016
When we booked this hotel, the Expedia website indicated our room would be oceanfront. My interpretation of oceanfront is the room should be facing the ocean with a view of the ocean. When we checked in, the room was not as described at all. We were given a room in the basement with no view of the ocean, a jammed door, and dripping AC. When I asked the front desk staff about these inconsistencies, she nicely pointed to the fine prints on the Expedia website. "See," she said "it's clearly indicated in the detail page." And when I ask why not just clearly label it as the title of the room as 'Partial Oceanfront on basement level,' she dispassionately mentioned that's not her job. Of course, no refund was given to us. The front desk staffs obviously do not know anything about hospitality, nor are they interested in helping the guests. Lucky the hotel manager Louis was more Reasonable and offered us a partial refund. Still, we decided this is not a hotel but a motel or inn at best, and chose to not stay a single night here this time, and likely we'll never be back.

Fantastic Ocean Views

Posted Dec 31, 2016
Pros: Location on the beach.
Cons: I liked it the way it was.
Location: Quiet location with easy access to Monterey.
Spectacular ocean views and long sweeping beach make this otherwise modest hotel a fantastic place to stay.

Nice location but that's all.

Posted Dec 30, 2016
The hotel was average. Small rooms and bathrooms but it was clean. We were next to the pool so it was very noisy. The staff mostly ignored us. The manager at the cafe was a nasty woman. She looked like she hated her job and took it out on others. Although I wasn't crazy about the hotel I would stay again only cause of the location. If you can deal with snobby people and rude staff this hotel will work.

Beach front views but mediocre boutique hotel

Posted Dec 28, 2016
Terrible customer service and beds have an awkward moldy smell possibly due to the proximity of the water but I've stayed beach front and not experienced the same. Best part of room is the view but the windows are never cleaned. WiFi is inconsistent and for the price, you can definitely find something better in this beautiful city.

Unfriendly to young people

Posted Dec 26, 2016
It was frustrating to see that they have a preference of their clientele. When we got signed for garden view we got highway view with parking spots but no garden. We could upgrade to the first floor ocean view which we did but by asking for higher floor he said they didn't had. Walking by later a older gentlemen asked the same question and got suggested a room on the 3rd floor with ocean view... never again..

We apologize for the misperception, as we value each and every guest of our property, and we work hard to ensure each visit is an exceptional one. It's unfortunate we missed the mark this time around, and we hope to speak in advance of return travels to better address your preferences for a more memorable visit.

Close to the beach, scenic view

Posted Dec 19, 2016
Great experience, staff were friendly and helpful. We got a complimentary upgrade to a seaside room and it was a wonderful view. The only small thing is the room seems to be meant for summer. We came in December. The seabreeze blew straight through our door and the heater sometimes had trouble keeping up. The location was very easy to find and on the fringe of the city. Right across the water is the wharf and aquarium. Both are within a pleasant drive. And the hotel has a package for the aquarium so do ask about it!
