An overrated resort in a truly wonderful location

Posted Sep 18, 2016
Pros: Location! The resort is just ok.
Cons: Three things: quality and variety of food, house keeping and Internet.
The lagoon is amazing. The staff is very nice, especially in their Nautical Shop - we really enjoyed snorkeling, underwater scooter and swimming with sharks and stingrays. Trip around the island was also magnificent. Negatives: the food was mediocre, the Internet was unreliable (good wifi coverage, but tiny throughput), house keeping made us laugh every day (after returning to the bungalow, we'd find a clean room, but no bottled water, no towels and no shampoo/gel - so we'd call and ask them to bring all of the above).

Excellent Location

Posted Aug 9, 2016
Pros: The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food was great.
Cons: The lobby and grounds definitely don't compare to places like the Hilton and Continental. The furniture in the lobby is a bit worn.
Location: The location is amazing! The beach is excellent and has great snorkeling and swimming. Felt very safe in the lagoon there.
The location can't be beat. The bed was a little too firm, but I slept fine. We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay here again in the future.

Phenomenal Over Water Bungalow Experience

Posted Jul 19, 2016
Pros: The over water bungalow was perfect, and the sea life in the lagoon was abundant. The breakfast buffet added a lot to the value of the stay.
Cons: It would be nice to have a few cheaper snack options. We went to a supermarket in town and picked up some snacks.
Location: The concierge was amazing, and helped us book fantastic excursions to a jungle hike to a waterfall, and Tiki Village Theater. Both were super values.
Our stay at the Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora was a perfect vacation. For the entire week we were there, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was a phenomenal value to be included in the room, and after maybe the third day the staff recognized us, greeted us by name, and remembered that I would not want coffee but my wife would want tea. The room was immaculate, with housekeeping and mini bar service making sure that all our needs were met several times a day. The lagoon featured incredible snorkeling right in among the bungalows, as the Sofitel participates in a coral protection program to preserve and encourage the growth of the coral reef in the lagoon. The dive shop on the resort rents underwater digital cameras, which you can provide your own SD card for. This was a wonderful addition to our trip, and we got some incredible pictures and videos of an octopus who lived between the two sets of bungalows, among other things. They also rent bikes that we a fun way to explore the island. The concierge/guest services desk was very useful, and helped us book various excursions on the island while we were there. They were eager to answer questions, and honest about steering us away from excursions that might be disappointing. For example, we were there just before whale season. While a whale watching excursion was listed among the available options, Estrella let us know that it really wasn't a good time of year for it. The food was always delicious.

Beautiful location but more self service

Posted Jul 10, 2016
Beautiful location. The lagoon is incredible. The service is almost non existent. Breakfast buffet it good and the ladies who run that are great. The main bar is very difficult to get service at. Poorly staffed and pure chaos. The beach bar was rarely open and closed for many of the days. The resort does not cater to their guests. Get you own beach chairs, cards to get beach towels at front desk. We found that strange as it was more like a cheap cruise ship than a luxury resort. This is our second time to Tahiti and we did not experience this at other islands and resorts. Also, bring your owns towels for bathing as getting clean towels, washcloths is a full contact sport.

the bed was not comfortable , ac was not working well and air stayed musty in room. Service was extremely slow and some of our orders were forgotten. For the price I paid , i did not feel it was 5 star hotel or service.

Great get away location.

Posted Jun 17, 2016 on Orbitz
Pros: The Hotel is certainly large enough and covers a decent amount of land to make you feel like you are not living on top of one another.
Cons: The hotel is in some places looking a little "tired" and perhaps had its best days before a needed face lift, but certainly not run down in anyway.
Location: Moorea is a chill out island, hire a car / bike to loop around the island, perhaps visit another beach (but you are on the best one here).
A great get away location, and perhaps the best location on the island of Moorea with its views back across to Tahiti. It sits on what is by far the best beach on the whole island. I cannot comment on the other high end locations (Hilton and one other which name escapes me) but the Temae Beach certainly has that lagoon aqua blue waters you dream of. With its east coast location it does mean you loose the sun light earlier in the day as the sun dips below the imposing mountain behind the resort, but what a back drop that is, simply stunning with the early morning sunrise which I highly recommend stepping out to enjoy (then catch up on that missed sleep on the beach later! ;) ) Moorea is an imposing range of mountains shooting straight out of the Pacific with little more than a road looping its perimeter. Do not think it is ringed with white sandy beaches you can stroll on to from any point, many if not most of the coastal areas are on private land, and if you did have access it would be to an immediate stretch of water with no beach. The private beaches for the resorts are the best places if this is what you are looking for. The interior is beautiful to look at but with staggeringly steep sides access is limited to say the least. There are some good hikes to go on, but if that is not for you a trip to Belvedere look out gives some great views. This is not a place to go if you want a wild night life, but if you wish to get away from it all. I can firmly recommend it.

Best Resort on Moorea

Posted Jun 6, 2016
Pros: The beautiful lagoon, the grounds were very nice, the over water bungalows amazing. Highly recommend if you can handle the cost to get one.
Cons: WiFI was poor and spotty. Cost for food and drink too high. Everything is very expensive though on these islands.
Location: Anything water, must see the swim with the rays, sharks and ATV tour. Hike to the water fall.. if you're lucky you with have a local dog guide you.
Sofitel was the best over water bungalow resort on Moorea, French Polynesia. We found the bungalows a little nicer in our opinion at Sofitel than others we looked at. Pluses were the bathroom has a separated toilet / shower, the lagoon was the clearest water with beautiful light blues and greens and the included buffet breakfast was very good. Also the spa was very nice and the onsite water / land activities were great. The staff was also friendly. We stayed in room 115 which had an amazing sunrise. some of the bungalows have an obstructed view so try and book the outer ones. Sunsets better on the other side of the island, we rented a car to see them and save some money on eating / drinking. Several markets on the island, buy items there to save a little, if money is no issue... just enjoy

Overpriced and under serviced!

Posted Jun 2, 2016 on Hotels
Delightful stay, but it's a Shame about the lack of service and care from staff about things such as room cleanliness. Don't think our dirty, dusty floor was cleaned at all while we were there. Wi fi was out for a whole afternoon as was the phone, so it was best to use when at reception Restaurant dinner menu was limited and pricey. Breakfast buffet could be good depending on what time you got there although staff were slow replacing food when it was picked over. We arrived from a cruise so were there about Noon. We were told to come back at 2pm for checkin and we could check bags and use a change room if we wanted. We checked our villa which wouldn't have been a quiet villa as requested so we asked to change to another nearby which was away from the path and nearer to the lagoon and was unoccupied and cleaned, they said it had been allocated to someone else, but after checking with a supervisor they allocated to us but still told us to come back at 2pm. Finally at the magic hour of 2 pm guests were given their keys! This really showed poor service and flexibility! The other thing was noise, being Mothers Day weekend they had a DJ and boom box blaring on the beach all day and then loud music at performances until well after 10pm..not good it you went there for a quiet, relaxing time! On the weekdays there was road noise from the heavy early morning traffic on the main road going past the hotel.

Beautiful hotel especially the bungalows!

Posted May 31, 2016 on Orbitz
Pros: Beautiful and clean
Cons: The food must be improved
Location: The dive shop was wonderful. Spa was good as well.
The hotel and staff are wonderful. The food was not good in the room service or the dining room. We had dinner at the upscale restaurant K and was not happy with one of the courses. The buffet couldn't keep anything warm or hot. So that was the only disappointment with our vacation at Sofitel Moorea.
