Wen Wan is one of the more expensive properties in the Sun Moon Lake area, and rightfully so as it sits on top of a hill overlooking the lake. Most of the rooms have a direct view of the lake. Only the triple and family quads seem to be located on the western corner where the lake view is slightly limited.
This is a very old property, and one of the more expensive—for the average Taiwanese—property. As a result, the occupancy seems pretty low for most of the year. This means that while the rooms are not in use, mold growth and insect manifestation is inevitable. If you are planning a hot spring spa trip, please make sure you rinse the in-room tub area before you fill it. You will notice the tub has a lot of growth and death being washed away.
Also, be careful when you go in the shower/bath area, because the watermakes it very slippery. Despite this danger, our room did not have a non-slip rubber pad. I nearly slipped and fell, but my leg hit the side of the tub, and took the brunt of the fall.
The rooms are very spacious, have great amenities, and the beds are very comfortable. However, there is no way to turn off absolutely every light at night.
If you cannot sleep unless it is absolutely pitch black, make sure you bring an eye mask.
Breakfast is entirely geared toward the Taiwanese tastebud. If you want an American breakfast, go somewhere else. There is a Starbucks just down the hill. The nearest MacDonald’s is about ten miles away in Puli township.
