Cozy gem in Calistoga

This was a business trip/couple getaway, and if you've ever been on one of those you know they're basically doomed by design. But The Craftsman Inn actually managed to salvage ours with the understated elegance of its well-accommodated rooms and the warm, unobtrusive hospitality and keen attention to detail of its owners and staff. We had an after-hours check-in, which included fresh cookies and a decanter of sherry in our room. The private, furnished balcony was just big enough for two to enjoy a glass of wine and some brisk fresh air before heading in to soak up the in-room jacuzzi tub. Breakfast, which is served buffet style downstairs in the communal dining room, was delicious, plentiful and reinforced with free make-your-own mimosas. From the bottles of cold water next to the bookshelf in the upstairs hallway to the chocolates and truffle on the bar with the house wine, this cozy, convenient B&B was a welcome respite from the bitter cold and damp of the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. The nightlife in Calistoga isn't too dynamic — it is wine country after all — but if you enjoy good food and drink, you'll find more than few mid to high-priced bars to to while away the (relatively) wee hours. And then there's always the sherry in the room!
