Debbie is a great host, very friendly and she even invited me to her Thanksgiving feast. Also on Friday nights they have a live jazz session in their living room, absolutely brilliant!! Only 15 mins to Manhattan via the A train and the station is less than a block away.

Pros: The best thing about the hotel was the lovely service from the staff, and the great conversations every morning over breakfast and coffee.
Cons: There was an issue with the hot water at the time, but I'm sure that will be fixed by the next time we show up.
Location: The BnB is just 3 blocks from the A and C lines on the subway, and a 15 minute walk to the Botanical Gardens and 20 min walk to Williamsburg.
Staying at the BnB with Denise running the show was an excellent choice. The hotel is an old row house renovated and turned into a multi room BnB. The service is fantastic with great made to order breakfast in the morning, and late night jazz and speakeasy drinks in the parlor at night. The beds are spacious and comfortable, rooms large, and just 3 block to the subway.

Pros: Fairly close to subway
Cons: All the details that are mentioned in the review
Location: The location has beautiful brown stone homes and is about 15 min walking to shops and restaurants that are typical to the area
The room is dark , dusty and dirty. The carpet was never vacumed. No lock or key to the room door. Noisy area at night. No TV . No reading light. No desk and no chair to sit on. We had to buy our own breakfast since Breakfast preparation started at 9:00AM ,and we came to NY for sightseeing not for breakfast waiting Shared bathroom was dirty Owner is very nice but it did not serve our purpose of staying in a nice clean and comfortable Setting

Brownstone Heaven in Brooklyn

We had an incredible time celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary at this beautiful bed and breakfast. The owner is a wonderful Lady who knows the history of the neighborhood and where to go for food and fun. Although the neighborhood has been a bit gentrified it is still a hub of African American cultural life. Sankofa Aban is just 1 of many black owned businesses in the area.

Enjoy living in a grand Brooklyn brownstone

Pros: The house has not been insensitively cut up or "modernized". My room had a splendid fireplace with mantel and tile surround.
Cons: It would be nice if gas fires could be installed, but safety rules may preclude that.
Location: I found the neighborhood warm and friendly. A woman who had misdirected me to Macon St. very kindly backtracked to correct the info.
I arrived a bit late after a train trip from Boston and braving holiday crowds to get through Penn Station and onto the subway A train express to Nostrand Avenue, the stop nearest Sankofa Aban. I had neglected to contact the gracious owner, Debbie, and also hadn't noted the 6 p.m. cutoff for checking in. Luckily I was able to phone her and from then on all went smoothly. The house exudes period charms and was also lavishly decked out for the holidays. It was a special privilege to be able to talk with Debbie over coffee about the history of the house and her family. She also recommended an excellent car service (Evelyn) to Newark Airport when I left on the morning of Dec 29 and again had to cope with holiday traffic in rain and fog, plus airport crowds. My two nights in the house were blissfully quiet, comfortable and relaxing. Thank you again, Debbie, and I look forward to returning. As I said before leaving, it really feels like a home away from home.

Pros: It isa place in a time warp everything apart from the plumbing is original. The Jazz evenings feature features greats of the genre
Cons: Take the place as you find it and just enjoy it.
Location: Close to subway, shops and restaurants.
If you want a 5 star hotel with lifts.....don't bother coming here!! If you want a a genuine experience of life in the borough ,Debbie your hostes s is a bundle of energy and a source of knowledge of al things Brooklyn, especially jazz. She is very protective of her clients preventing them from being ripped off by taxi drivers and telling you the best places for whatever you need!!

First off the house is beautiful with a lot of history on a quiet safe street. You wouldn't believe how close you really are to everything. Public transport a short walk away the A train will quickly wizz you through to Midtown. My room was spacious unlike shoe boxes you would pay a crazy amount to stay in, in Manhattan. I want to specifically highlight how much of a star Debbie is. She was so helpful and friendly! You can tell she is a busy women but she was so easy to contact and I saw her often. I've seen a couple of sour reviews and I really don't understand because I had a great experience and there was even a couple who were there for a second stay. This place deserves all its good reviews! I'm 100 percent suggesting this place to anyone I know visiting NY. Ohh and the Jazz night was so good!

Nice B&B let down by Owner

When booking we we not aware of any restriction over check-in, but once booked it stated check-in was only available from 3pm until 6pm, our flight did not land until 10.00pm. We therefore email and messaged Debbie the owner to advise, she read both messages but did not reply, we assumed this was ok, as we were not told otherwise. We arrived to find no-one was at home, we then contacted her by phone, and she was out in Manhattan, she said she would be back in hour ? 3 hours later she turned up and left us on the doorstep until 1.00am in the morning Breakfast was never served , she stayed in bed until at least 10.00am everday ???

My booking didnot reach Sankofa Aban though I had paid full in advance. Then I have to struggle to get the coordination done between expedia and Sankofa Aban. But beyond that Sankofa Aban was a wonderful place to stay, no thanks to Expedia
