Wonderful older hotel - part of New York history
Posted Jan 10, 2017
I love this hotel. It is in a class of its own in terms of history and atmosphere. The staff are well-trained, helpful and friendly. Sitting in the lounge lobby sipping a well-crafted cocktail is one of New York's best experiences.
The property has been renovated in recent years and has suffered just a little as some of the old charm has been lost, but not so much as to spoil things. My only criticism is that though the renovations have homogenized the place a little too much for my taste, they haven't paid attention to some of the basic comforts modern guests have come to expect. For example, there are no tea/coffee makers in the rooms and although the lobby has coffee available in the morning - that all stops at 2:00 in the afternoon. In our room an old window-fitted a/c unit let in a lot of very cold air so that we had to keep the heating fan cranked up to maximum to maintain heat overnight - the noise was pretty loud. I understand that with older hotels you may have to sacrifice on things like room size or number of elevators and I am happy to do so for a gem such as this, but that should not mean giving up some other comforts which are easy for the hotel to provide. Corporate H.Q. needs to take note as I doubt I am the only guest to feel this way.
