Great location, but spartan rooms

A frequent traveler to NYC, I have had my eye on the James for a while but it's usually priced above comparable hotels in the area. Now that I've tried it, I won't be back. While the bar and restaurant are excellent the rest of the stay was quite average. The rooms are stylish, but very small, even by NY standards, and lack any comfortable touches, except for the large well stocked bar, which seems impractical especially since the area to unwind and relax is not exactly comfortable and tiny. There are no real chairs or couches in the rooms, just a table with a banquette and a hard chair. And the toiletries were below average as well.
Service was nonexistent. Everyone was pleasant but the place felt empty. Despite the emptiness they put me across from an elevator when better rooms were certainly available---especially when the hotel supposedly had Expedia VIP perks for gold members like myself. Other VIP hotels have been excellent with upgrades, surprises like champagne in the room, etc. I didn't get the sense I was a VIP, or even an IP, at the James at all.
