Good location, friendly staff, clean but noisy

I've been to NYC many times, and stayed in many hotels. I stayed at Hotel Moderne for a week. The staff were nice and friendly. The location was great, being near to Central Park, subway stations, and a lot of attractions. There were also a lot of really nice restaurants nearby. The guest lounge was nice with a coffee machine which came in very useful. The hotel also leaves out some cake every day, which is a very friendly thing to do, and appreciated by those who managed to grab a slice. If you read the blurb you see that the hotel is trying to emulate a friendly, European-style hotel. It does do this and has creative décor.
Like all hotels in NYC, there are a few things to take note of. The room had no natural daylight, which I could live with, considering there was a guest lounge which you could use at any time. The window had a permanent blind which could not be wound up. The one thing that bothered me was that there was some machinery outside of the window (maybe a floor or 2 down) which was causing a lot of humming and vibrations throughout the night. I opened the window to try to locate it and I suspect the noise levels would affect many rooms. An adjoining wall also vibrated quite heavily in the night, perhaps caused by the aircon next door. I took 6 pairs of earplugs and used them every night, and could still hear the noise and hear the vibrations transmitted through my bed. I still managed to sleep 'OK', waking once or twice per night. The mattress was too firm
