Great upgrade

My original hotel was closing down, so I rang Expedia to weigh up my options. They offered me the W union square as a alternative for the same price. When I arrived at the hotel, I couldn't believe how much better it was. A hotel I normally wouldn't be able to afford. The location was perfect, and then I saw my room. Clean spacious with all the comforts you would expect. Although I avoided the $8 bottled water and the $7 m&ms' I had a wonderful stay at the W. A great experience for my first time back in NY in 11 years. Thank you Expedia.

Our weekend in Union Square

We enjoyed the area the hotel was in. We had a snowstorm for our stay, but we got to walk around the area to see the restaurants we wanted to have lunch and dinner in. In addition, the hotel staff was very courteous and we received a room upgrade and free wi-fi access

Very good location, rooms of very good standard

Pros: Bathrooms, beds
Cons: Noise from the generators on the roof.
Pretty much all about this hotel is good - room is nicely decorated, facilities good, comfortable beds, excellent location. The only criticism I would have is (for our room at least) the noise from the generators at the back of the hotel. I was in room 614 and on a couple of nights struggled to sleep. Initially I thought it was being caused by the airconditioner in the room until I turned it off and the noise continued. The 'engine' noise was persistent and even with earplugs it seeped through. I called reception at 1am to see if they could turn them down or off or something as they were making a high pitched sound. Unfortunately, all they could do is offer me earplugs - and though they said they'd leave a note for the manager, nobody called us back. We probably could have been more pushy but we were nearing the end of our trip and were so exhausted it didn't seem worth it. The windows in these rooms are not double glazed - and that is part of the issue. Seems there is such a simple fix I'm not sure why they don't use it.

Great location and comfy bed but bad bathrooms

At the W Union Square, you're paying for location. You're at the northeast corner of Union Square Park, near tons of subway and bus lines. Great food and shopping are right on your doorstep. It's an incredibly convenient location if you're looking to spend most of your time in downtown or midtown Manhattan. The bed was very comfortable, and the rooms are gigantic compared to other NYC hotels. However, this hotel is showing its age, especially in the bathrooms (see attached picture of the shower stall floor in room 1201). The condition was unacceptable at this price point. Also, I had to request maintenance for two bathroom issues. The sink was badly clogged, and the metal towel hook fell off the wall (nearly crushed my toe). The maintenance folks left quite a mess in the bathroom, including a 1.5 foot long strip of gunky hair in the toilet (from the sink). There are other hotels in the area at this price point that are newer and nicer. I won't stay here again.
