Nice hotel w/rooftop bar overlooking the city

Posted Sep 24, 2016
Great customer service from the moment you drive up from the valet service, to check-in, to the bartenders and housekeeping. Short drive to Thame or you can uber it which I recommend as parking can be expensive and hard to find in peak season.

Prof'l staff, clean spaces, great local.

Pleasant and focused staff, open and clean entrance - welcoming, we stayed in a smaller room, no real place to put our luggage in room, or shaving/make-up kit in bathroom, but great location with views and walking to stores. We will be back again for business and/or pleasure.

Hotel close to the wharf and the historic mansions

Posted Sep 11, 2016
Pros: Good location.
With the exception of one server, staff were unfriendly and not helpful. The room had a bathroom, with no sink. The sink was in the closet across the hall, which was inconvient to say the least. It was also in dire need of a remodel and not what I expected for the level of this hotel. The coverlet on the beds was riddled with stains and iron burn marks. Why would you lay these on the beds? My main complaint is with the hotel restaurant. While eating dinner, I looked down to see a small mouse who runs into the floorboards. I called over a server and calmly explained what I saw; I didn't want to make a scene for the otter diners. The manager never came out to speak to me, nor did they compensate our meal. The server simply came back, after confirming where the mouse went to was the kitchen, and informed us they would put out traps. I cannot believe our treatment at a supposedly "nicer" hotel. Needless to say, I did not enjoy the hotel as I kept looking around for other rodents.

Pros: We lived in Newport for five years.
Cons: Redo the Bar and the lobby more in the style of the rest of the hotel and change the pricing structure.
Location: The location is great and within walking distance of many activities and great restaurants.
They ruined the bar and the lobby by modernizing it in a WW ll style hotel. The wait staff were not particularly friendly and though the food is very good, it is overpriced especially the Breakfast Buffet. It's outrageous to charge $35 a day to park a car there and then be expected to tip the runners. They call it a "Resort" in order to charge an additional $16 per day but it's not like any true Resort that we have been to previously. All in all, we were very disappointed.

We enjoyed our stay including the delicious food in the dining room and the excellent musical entertainment in the bar. Nice room and helpful, pleasant staff. I definitely recommend this hotel and would happily return.

Just one night...close and convenient

Posted Sep 9, 2016
Pros: Staff, atmosphere, proximity to downtown, view from the rooftop bar.
Cons: Though it is teeny tiny...flowers in vases anywhere (breakfast room) should be cared for and vases cleaned.
Location: Newport offers so many things... this property is near to downtown shops, restaurants and attractions and also biking/car distance to mansions.
I brought my Mother here for one night. It is close and convenient to the waterfront, and also to the mansions by car. Downtown area is walking distance which I like. The bar and restaurant in the lobby are good and very convenient for a drink/breakfast. The rooftop bar has a great view though I think they could do a little more with it. Still, there are several places to be comfortable without leaving the hotel. The staff were all excellent. While waiting to ask a question at the front desk, a gentleman (obviously done for work for the day and on his way out) asked me what I needed and advised me. It turned out he was the hotel general manager. This is a very good sign to me, and I can see that the care and concern comes from the top. I would be happy to stay at the Viking again, however if you have elderly travelers, let the staff know. It is a very large hotel so a bit of walking to certain rooms. We were nicely accommodated.

Not a great experience

Posted Sep 7, 2016
Hotel room telephone was not functional. Booked a King Bed via expedia and king bed was not provided by hotel. No vanity mirror in bathroom. Hotel check-in listed at 4pm and hotel did not have room ready at 4pm; I had to wait nearly 20 to 30 minutes, checking in around 4:20.
