Nice hotel in Downtown OaklandPosted Sep 26, 2015
Pros: friendly staff and clean room/ amenities.
Cons: Make sure room key cards work for full length of stay or let us know that for security reasons (or other), we need to have the key cards re-processed.
I usually don't write reviews but I feel that this hotel deserves it. 100% smoke free or they will charge a good chunk of money.. as a non-smoker this is greatly appreciated. Somewhat small single bed/1 person rooms but equipped with everything needed. The staff was super friendly and they made both my check-in and check-out extremely easy. They understand that you might forget a few things when you travel so they offer several complementary products like razors and deodorants upon request. Additionally, even though their gym is super small (only 3 machines) it is very clean, has towels, and a water machine + small cups for your convenience in case you forget your water bottle. They offer complementary breakfast but I can't review that since I never actually ate there. I only had one issue: my key card didn't work on the second day of stay but it was fixed within seconds. It is walking distance to a few corporate buildings and Convention Center, Chinatown, and several BART stations so it very easy to move around the area and even go to San Francisco for a few hours if you want. I most definitely recommend the hotel and would stay here again.

Grateful for the RoomPosted Sep 26, 2015
The doorkey didn't work, but that seemed minimal compared to Marriott canceling my reservation and having Expedia search for a room after midnight in downtown Oakland. The Marriott reservation agent said no one stays at the Clarion, it is a two star hotel, but I found the room clean, the bed comfortable, and the internet and breakfast were included. I have never been more grateful for a hotel room in my life. Thank you Clarion. If you are in downtown Oakland for one night for work and need a decent, clean room near the center, I think this is a fine place to stay.

OK for the price, but you can do better.Posted Sep 3, 2015
Pros: Close to Broadway and the Bus Line. It was also very quiet for a hotel in the city. Friendly and helpful staff.
Cons: The room was really small, but I expect that at an old hotel. Could use some cosmetic updates. The Wifi was down for part of the time we were there.
Location: Broadway is the main drag and the bus line is close. The historic Tribune building is next door which has a nice little restaurant and bar.
Stayed here on our first day. Didn't realize it was basically in China Town, which is offers some great places to eat but isn't the nicest part of Oakland. Did a lot of night time walking from this hotel, which was fine if you're with a group but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it alone. Later in our trip we got a room at the Washington Inn just two blocks away and for only 10 bucks more which was much nicer. Small rooms (really small in our case) and not many amenities but the price was right. Generally clean but shows it's age. All the employees we talked to were great and they allowed us to check in very early. One attendant even looked up the bus schedule for us.

Close to the State building (walking distance)Posted Sep 3, 2015
Pros: Only a few blocks from the State building.
I needed an affordable hotel room near the State building, and this met that purpose. Room was small with almost no natural light (one window looked out at a building being constructed). Rooms would be more cheerful if they used brighter colors and a little more lighting. I was lucky to get a parking spot in the lot next door; parking spots are quite close together (don't bring a large vehicle and expect to fit). Hotel staff was helpful.

Poor sleeping.Posted Aug 28, 2015
Pros: It was relatively new. The main stairway was very nice and invited one to walk up rather than take the elevator. Hot breakfast was nice.
Cons: Make the rooms quieter.
Location: For my purposes, the location was excellent. BART station 1 ½ block away. Close to where I was to be working while there. Short on restaurants.
I had a room facing the street. It was extremely noisy. Windows did little to block out the noise. My room also opened into the elevator lobby. That added additional noise and difficulty in sleeping.

My room was very clean. Adequate size, but only barely. Door was terribly hard to open.
