An old barn situated along Palo Alto Road.
As you can see, it is still in use, but for how much longer is anyone's guess. And, at the other end of the day, a sunset over the Olympics. This is an original WW II lookout observation tower built in 1941 to serve as an early warning system for the residents of Sequim. The idea that the Japanese could have managed the hundred-mile flight down the coast without at least some measure of resistance before reaching Sequim seems a bit far-fetched today. But in December, 1941, with the memory of Pearl Harbor fresh in everyone's mind, anything seemed possible.
The tower sits a good deal inland at this point, the result of an effort to preserve it that saw it dragged from location to location until it finally came to rest in a nondescript, but fairly substantial back yard.
The plaque reads: This Dungeness aircraft warning service tower built by volunteers in Dec. 1941 has been placed on the Federal Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of Interior. April 1993.
It may be the same structure depicted in the link below, but if it is, it would have had to have been transported from the end of a five-mile spit to terra firma: http://newdungenesslighthouse.com/?attachment_id=45 This 45-foot cooling tower is in such a state of disrepair that the owners refuse (politely) to let anyone near it, lest the structure collapse.
It was built in 1907 and consists of an ingenious series of ramps over which cooled water ran to keep the milk fresh before it was exported to market.
Obviously, it is no longer in operation.
http://www.sequimgazette.com/news/251260701.html This is a beautiful little spot just outside the town of Sequim. There's a restaurant and a gymnasium, and more boat masts than you can possibly count after a glass or two of wine.
I chased a Kingfisher up and down the parking lot, then sat in wonder as the sun went down and the lights came out.
Lucky little Kingfisher. He gets to see this every day. This quiet little museum in the heart of Sequim houses some extraordinary pieces, including this 1907 REO Model This 85-foot grain elevator was built in 1945 and decommissioned in 1977. Since then, the ownership has changed hands several times, most recently in 2014.
It is the tallest structure in town and towers over the rest of the otherwise rather compressed architecture by a good 50 feet.
A couple of hours later, just after sunset. Sailboats bobbing on the deep blue a couple of hours before sunset. Sunrise out the back porch in the rental at Sequim. Farmhouse along Ward Road in Sequim, Washington. Another look at the REO.
If you're ever in Sequim (and you know you will be), you owe it to yourself to have a meal at Alder Wood Bistro.
It won't necessarily be easy. The place is open only four days a week -- from Thursday through Sunday, and you may have to offer one of your kidneys to get a weekend reservation.
But the food is tremendous, and each plate shows a deft but elegant touch of a chef who -- without pretense -- can spin magic out of almost any ingredient.
Go Thursday, or scope out a reservation a month or two in advance.
I swear it will be worth it. The Marina on a cloudy evening shortly before sunset, with the foothills of the Olympic Mountains in the background. The view from the back porch of the rental, a couple of hours before sundown. Clouds coursing over the Olympics shortly after sunrise. If you're looking for a menu straight out of old Provence...well...you might not find it here. The owners mix the best of that traditional cuisine with a distinct Northwest flair.
The results are spectacular, and the place is usually stuffed to the gills. But as you can see from this image, it never feels rushed or close or busy. Perhaps it's the view from every window and every outdoor table that tends to draw one's mind away from the rush of the world and all its anxiety -- though all of it may be too soon to return.
I can't recommend the place enough.
Just go. You'll be glad you did. In a medium-sized parking lot just a little way outside Port Townsend sit some of the coolest, cutest and most drool-worthy vintage automobiles you're ever likely to find.
Apologies, though. I just went a little ADHD and didn't bother to get the name of the spot. Feel a bit foolish.
This little grape-colored truck/wagon is probably a British make, judging from the Union Jack on the hood [which I guess could also be some after-market shenanigans]. Grey Jay parking at the bird feeder at Sequim. Just before sunrise at Sequim. The rental house in Sequim had its own cast of characters.
Here, a Red-tailed Flicker tosses up some fir needles in search of vermin. For those of you unfamiliar with the story of the 1936 Olympic-champion 8-man crew from the University of Washington, I highly recommend the book, The lavender fields in Squim are stunning and it's fun to find a place to pick your own bundle. Lavender fields at Purple Haze Lavender Farm in Sequim.
#lifeatexpedia Lavender farms at Sequim Washington! A nice place to relax, have a lavender lemonade/ ice cream and enjoy some refreshing scents of lavender! Rock formation at the base of the Columbia River Gorge. Explore downtown Sequim and enjoy this Farmers and Arts Market on Saturdays in season.
