Flame Skimmer (female) What a sweet place to wander around in the unspoiled wilderness of Laguna Canyon. We were there during a weekday in the middle of June, and practically had the place to ourselves.
There are miles of trails -- dozens of miles of trails -- that take you through every kind of geographic and topographic feature you can envision for a southwestern landscape.
And there is wildlife everywhere you look.
The main building here has an interpretive center for children, and some nice, shady spots to rest and grab fresh water.
There are plenty of beautiful places to hike in Orange County, but this one may be the most serene and least-travelled one in the area. California Rose-winged Grasshopper Orange-throated Whiptail
Out in the sun, these speed-demons are a bit easier to spot. Once they get into the shade, well, you can see what happens.
That may have been why this one stopped so long to allow me to get close enough. It probably thought it was invisible there in the shadows. If I had not seen him go there, I probably would never have realized there was anything but...well...whatever all that other stuff is...sitting in the shade.
You've got to hand it to nature for all the ingenious ways it adopts to protect the creatures that roam around in it. Barbara's Lake
This is the only natural lake left in all of Orange County. Seriously.
It made me do a double-take when I heard it for the first time, but it's absolutely true. Fortunately, it is smack in the middle of a wilderness preserve, so it's likely to be protected for a good long time.
Also, I think even the jaded residents of the OC would be embarrassed to admit that they let the last natural lake in their county dry up on their watch.
This makes for #waterlust of an entirely different kind.
[ http://ocmomblog.com/barbaras-lake-orange-countys-only-natural-lake/ ] The trees of southern California are wiry and tough. They've adapted to one of the most brutal and arid climates for flora in all the country (the high desert is just an hour or two to the east). And yet they flourish, even through drought years such as this one.
A wizened old Blue Oak such as the one you see in this photo has a myriad number of ingenious adaptations to hold it safe during both the winter and the summer. It can shed its leaves to withstand a drought no matter what time of the year. Its extensive and elaborate root system can dig down a hundred feet and crack through rock in a effort to obtain water.
And yet they look so frail and delicate, almost ethereal really. You'll pardon if I gloss over the fact that this means they're exposing less surface to the sun.
To me it seems as if they could catch a sharp breeze at any moment and be lifted off the ground like a feather.
It won't happen. They'll all outlive me. But the notion that such a tough and tenacious living entity could appear as fragile as a paper flower is one of those mysteries that keeps drawing me back into the wilderness.
[source: http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/blue_oak.htm] The park's interpretive center has clean lines, an elegant design, and, get this: air conditioning, all the cold water you may need to refill your supplies, and the cleanest public restrooms in the galaxy [I don't know about that last part, but it is hard to imagine them any cleaner].
The staff is very helpful if you arrive without a clue about the trail system or the park's topography in general. Which probably applies to almost everyone who walks in the door.
They'll hand you maps for the various areas encompassed by the park, highlight them for you, tell you where the wildlife is, what rock formations you might find, elevation gains, mileage... well, you name it.
Since the center is, well, pretty much at the center of the park, you can use it as a pivot area to loop through along the various trails. That way, you can pick up more water, take a bathroom break, sit in the shade and grab a power bar (which you will have to bring yourself), and rest up for the next leg of your journey.
Very convenient, very well-designed, very well-staffed. For those who hike as much as we do, that is worth its weight in gold. Situated in a series of canyons, the park offers views of some fairly jaw-dropping rock formations. The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is situated on 7,000 acres nestled in some of the last The center does have its principal adherents, who visit day after day to admire the architecture and gaze across the countryside in wonder and amazement.
Of course, loyalty of this kind is generously rewarded.
They pay no admittance or parking fees and can take their pick of any rodent they see on the property.
We should all have it so good. Los Olivos Club House!
Irvine, California Pusheen macaron is a rare find.
