The California Fish and Wildlife Department has scattered dozens of these nesting boxes throughout the refuge. This Barn Swallow eyed me warily the whole time I was taking photographs.
It needn't have bothered. I've already eaten my quota of Barn Swallow for the year. Landing at John Wayne Airport in Orange County. This is the 405 frwy looking towards Irvine. Lots of birds diving and soaring around the preserve, but most did not come close enough [or stay still enough] for the Fuji to do its work. Fortunately, this Turkey Vulture accommodated me with a fly-by. He was probably no more than eight feet from my face.
Seriously, though, the place is a massive aviary. With all that abundant marine life bubbling about under the surface, the area can support as many of these creatures as are able to tolerate living together.
And that is a surprising number, though the toleration varies in its magnitude from one minute to the next. A ride called Just leaving the office and saw this and had to share... Honey Bee on Beach Coreopsis
Lots of wildflowers at the preserve this time of year, and lots of critters punching the clock to get the pollen and nectar collected on time.
The Beach Coreopsis flowers have blossoms about twice the size of a silver dollar, though the center isn't much bigger than a quarter [does anybody still know what those are?].
This bee spent a bit of time on this blossom, leading me to believe that there was a mess'o'powder to forage. Stop and think Leave it to the OC to build a combination automobile/bicycle/pedestrian path, each with its own lane, along a three mile stretch of the upper portion of the Newport Bay.
But that is exactly what they did.
The trail is all asphalt, with a few very small offshoots into dirt Near the entrance to the Preserve is a structure called the Muth Interpretive Center. From the literature, it sounds as if this location is used to help educate the public about the efforts to restore and maintain the refuge, and to offer educational services to local schools and families about the wildlife in the area.
Really a sweet-sounding place.
However, admittance is by invitation only, and the place is locked down tighter than Area-51.
That doesn't keep the birds from dropping by to perch on some of the structures both inside and outside the center.
This Mourning Dove sat quietly while I hid like a cat burglar behind my hiking partner and tried to get a picture. Ten photos taken, only one in focus, but I think it's a good one.
William Jones took an even snazzier one a couple of days ago, and he mentioned to me in a comment that he never realized how colorful these birds are, though they appear almost grey from a distance.
They would have always been grey to me because that is how I generally get to see them. With this one exception. This is an exquisite plant whose name I was able to find on Google this morning, but promptly lost the link. Those in the know (@throwingsofas) might nudge me in the right direction.
The blossoms are silvery-white, with very thin petals, as you can see from an example in the upper left. The rest of the plant is literally covered in little iridescent beads [Google iridescent bead flowers and prepare yourself for the biggest crafts' fair on the internet].
There are pods which contain both ruby beads and colorless beads, But the rest of the plant is encrusted with the colorless variety. I have to believe this is some form of water collection system for the plant, though I can only guess at this point.
They are unimaginably beautiful to see strewn along the path like a trail of polished gems. As we are likely to say anytime we take a picture -- the photo doesn't do them justice. C and Java fans take note! The Preserve was established back in 1975 after a fairly ferocious battle between environmentalists and, well, everybody else. I doubt there is anyone alive today who regrets the turn of events.
For one thing, huge swaths of land have been preserved [and protected] in pristine form, for another, public access through the place makes it a popular destination for runners, hikers and slow-driving tourists.
Finally, the surrounding area is almost completely developed for business, high-end residential, and hotel property.
Everybody wins...well, as long as you're willing to keep your head pointed in the direction most suited to your tastes.
It's probably a workable model only where almost everyone is working with a set of unlimited resources and is willing to put them on the line in pursuit of their interests.
A Walden for billionaires, if you wish. But I gotta admit, it seems to work. Very nice courtyard surrounded by high rise buildings. Lots of artwork and fountains to see. This photo was taken through glass, so it's not as clear. Grill em all truck! The Wite burger. Nom nom. Bacon burger with Sriacha chili paste and cream cheese. So good though! My bagel from Shirley's. Cream cheese was delicious. It was a misty day but so worth it! I would recommend the cruise to anyone.
