The Newport Beach Pier gives you a fantastic view of the sunset over the Pacific in Orange County, California. The pier has sweeping views of the surrounding fancy houses, and you may also get to see lots of the local fisherman catching the freshest seafood off the pier. But the real star of the show is the sun, of course, which puts on an incredibly colorful show before dipping down beneath the waves. Definitely a must-do if you're in Southern California! (#beach) Lots of birds diving and soaring around the preserve, but most did not come close enough [or stay still enough] for the Fuji to do its work. Fortunately, this Turkey Vulture accommodated me with a fly-by. He was probably no more than eight feet from my face.
Seriously, though, the place is a massive aviary. With all that abundant marine life bubbling about under the surface, the area can support as many of these creatures as are able to tolerate living together.
And that is a surprising number, though the toleration varies in its magnitude from one minute to the next. Every year the city of Newport Beach does a boat parade around the harbor. The best part is that, in addition to decorating the boats for Christmas, they decorate the docks and houses along the waterfront. It’s a Christmas wonderland! Crystal cove state beach is the home to many fascinating sea creatures. During low tide, head anywhere off in the rocks and you'll find these little guys among many more birds, shells and crabs. Make sure to be respectful and leave them be! Come to the balboa pier and play the arcade games, eat some pizza, and ride the Ferris wheel! Beautiful sunset at balboa island. Enjoying the last days of November! Bacon wrapped pickles...YES! A culinary masterpiece! 3...2...1... Launch...
Epic waves brought surfers, body boarders and crowds to watch it all.
#BvSWater Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joes? Why not! Looking for perspective come out and play at the wedge! Surf is up!
#waterlust Regardless of the weather - the beaches & piers at Balboa and Newport are stunning year round. Bring a friend and relax as the waves come in...
#BvSWater #longexposure #ocean #pier Honey Bee on Beach Coreopsis
Lots of wildflowers at the preserve this time of year, and lots of critters punching the clock to get the pollen and nectar collected on time.
The Beach Coreopsis flowers have blossoms about twice the size of a silver dollar, though the center isn't much bigger than a quarter [does anybody still know what those are?].
This bee spent a bit of time on this blossom, leading me to believe that there was a mess'o'powder to forage. ...from Balboa Island.
Its a great little island to see the funky homes, grab a coffee or a quick bite to eat.
If you aren't in a hurray, there is also a three car ferry that putters across to the peninsula. Leave it to the OC to build a combination automobile/bicycle/pedestrian path, each with its own lane, along a three mile stretch of the upper portion of the Newport Bay.
But that is exactly what they did.
The trail is all asphalt, with a few very small offshoots into dirt Sedum at sunset.
The variety and number of these on the property was really astonishing. Near the entrance to the Preserve is a structure called the Muth Interpretive Center. From the literature, it sounds as if this location is used to help educate the public about the efforts to restore and maintain the refuge, and to offer educational services to local schools and families about the wildlife in the area.
Really a sweet-sounding place.
However, admittance is by invitation only, and the place is locked down tighter than Area-51.
That doesn't keep the birds from dropping by to perch on some of the structures both inside and outside the center.
This Mourning Dove sat quietly while I hid like a cat burglar behind my hiking partner and tried to get a picture. Ten photos taken, only one in focus, but I think it's a good one.
William Jones took an even snazzier one a couple of days ago, and he mentioned to me in a comment that he never realized how colorful these birds are, though they appear almost grey from a distance.
They would have always been grey to me because that is how I generally get to see them. With this one exception. Bird on a wire. More specifically, a Scrub Jay on a wire. But that kind of ruins the poetry, doesn't it? Bougainvillea bush at night under incandescent light.
Did not have much chance to share some of the marvels of the house where we stayed in the OC.
Such a beautiful place. At night or during the day. A whole urn-full of sedum basking under the long, late rays of the sun. Founded by Candace Nelson, this cupcake boutique offers delicious, moist, and decadent treats. There are several locations throughout California, and you can vote to bring Sprinkles to your town! I'd recommend the red velvet and lemon coconut. Sprinkles also offers different flavors depending on the day of the week. Candice Nelson is also featured on Food Network's show Cupcake Wars! This is an exquisite plant whose name I was able to find on Google this morning, but promptly lost the link. Those in the know (@throwingsofas) might nudge me in the right direction.
The blossoms are silvery-white, with very thin petals, as you can see from an example in the upper left. The rest of the plant is literally covered in little iridescent beads [Google iridescent bead flowers and prepare yourself for the biggest crafts' fair on the internet].
There are pods which contain both ruby beads and colorless beads, But the rest of the plant is encrusted with the colorless variety. I have to believe this is some form of water collection system for the plant, though I can only guess at this point.
They are unimaginably beautiful to see strewn along the path like a trail of polished gems. As we are likely to say anytime we take a picture -- the photo doesn't do them justice. Just another beast shot yesterday...
#waterlust C and Java fans take note! The Preserve was established back in 1975 after a fairly ferocious battle between environmentalists and, well, everybody else. I doubt there is anyone alive today who regrets the turn of events.
For one thing, huge swaths of land have been preserved [and protected] in pristine form, for another, public access through the place makes it a popular destination for runners, hikers and slow-driving tourists.
Finally, the surrounding area is almost completely developed for business, high-end residential, and hotel property.
Everybody wins...well, as long as you're willing to keep your head pointed in the direction most suited to your tastes.
It's probably a workable model only where almost everyone is working with a set of unlimited resources and is willing to put them on the line in pursuit of their interests.
A Walden for billionaires, if you wish. But I gotta admit, it seems to work. California sunset seen from Pelican Hill. If you golf, put this one on your bucket list. Rated #1golf resort in the world-2012 by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine Great view from awesome homes located here in Newport Beach. This is the best view of ocean ever I have seen specially sunset it looks great....check it out My bagel from Shirley's. Cream cheese was delicious. Go time A bit more muted color scheme with the incandescent lights still waiting on their timer.
Remember that bird on the wire. Newport back bay beautiful all times of the year . Even during the winter you can still experience a beautiful sunset Such a great little French place. Food is great, and the people are really nice... and French: ) Just something fun for family and friend to do for the summer in California Heavy shallow waves
#waterlust #beach #ocean #waterlust #newportbeach #california Nothing like a great hamburger on a #sundayfunday #foodiefinds The beach clears out after 4...just in time for some sunset yoga. #lens4change #BeachBound I love a pacific coast sunset. Visitors are always welcome. Beautiful landscaping, pleasant environment #newport #beach #california The Balboa Beach Pier makes for a great photography subject but it's also an incredible place to spend time with family & friends. Parking is typically easy to find and it's a great way to spend the evening! A cloudy Newport Beach California. It's certainly just as busy as any other SoCal beach around here but the boardwalk area is fun for cruising a beach cruiser Back Bay Loop, 10.6 miles of gorgeous wildlife.
www.surfseayouandme.com While waiting for our boat to take a spin around Newport Harbor, we were greeted by one of the resident fowls of Newport Beach. A walk on the beach is always a good idea. Especially on gorgeous January SoCal days! #lens4change #BeachBound I headed out at 5AM to Laguna Beach, CA to do some sunrise seascapes. While I was setting up, a woman walked and stood into frame. I thought she really added to the composition, so I hurried to get the shot.
#BvsCities Hot tip from David Cedrone Great, high end pub style food, 26 draft beers, full bar, very cool space and valet parking to boot! Also, great breakfast spot (pictured: their spin on cured salmon frittata). The duck fat French fries are insane. Couple of Newport Beach, watering hole institutions, and some of what remains of the old school, Newport Beach, apres surf culture of yesteryear: Blackie's and The Beach Ball. If you are in town, and want a taste of the real surfer/biker/beach bum- lifer culture, you need to saddle up to one, or both of these bars. So great to see they've made it this far. Bottoms up! Finding a reason to get out of bed #beach
Seems time has stopped in this SoCa community and that's want I enjoyed the most here: slow pace stroll on a beach, a bike ride, and grabbing a lunch at one of the local eateries. Take a $1 ferry ride to a Balboa Island for shopping and tourist attractions Christmas tradition in Newport Beach brings a huge tree in for decoration. This years edition is purportedly 90 feet high. The perfection exists !!! . Morning stroll before the winds gets stronger. Great spot overlooking the harbor, with average (bar) food, but really cold beer and lots of old-school character. I used to frequent the place in the mid 80s, and it's still going strong. Once owned by Chuck Norris's wife, Linda. Rollerblading Huntington Beach to the Wedge. #beach One of my favorite Newport beaches. Tucked away from the busier parts of the beach, this little cove is usually pretty peaceful. #colorful Waves at the Wedge! If you want to see a strong current I suggest you come here! #waterlust #pigeons #beachside #sand #beach #ocean #waterlust #newportbeach #california Waiting for the Freelance Harbor cruise to see the nicely decorated houses for Christmas. This Chef doesn't mess around. A bit pricey however the food is so worth it! The duck liver pate was absolutely amazing and you have to try the octopus salad. I have never in my life has such tender octopus! The fillet with roasted garlic is another favorite. The Fall and Winter months the Chef serves a steak tatare and is how it should be prepared; with a quail's egg! Jet packing over Newport, California! #waterlust If you find yourself in Newport Beach or really any of the OC and want some of the freshest fish and crab possible head over to the Dory Fishing Fleet Market.
You'll need to get up super early if you want the best selection but man is it worth it! You'll want to check their website to see what's in season before you go. Enjoy! Gorgeous paddle session surrounded by nature with our NIXY Inflatable SUPs Like is an adventure... enjoy it! Love this spot; try to visit early AM every trip to Newport (15th St.). Best breakfast burrito in SoCal, hands down, served right on the strand/sand. Amazing donuts! Made with fresh ingredients everyday! The flavors are well put together! Love the maple/bacon, however the rosemary is a great option as well! Check them out!!! Balboa Island 2017 A place to see some up close a personal waves and riders Ok ok I get it. Shortest line at the fair! Some crazy helmet in an old metal shop Just around the corner from the big corona del mar beach, you'll find this little spot tucked into the coastline. Less people, more tide pools - a good spot for some beach time. #beach Surprisingly, the BEST fish and chips I've ever eaten. The restaurant is right on the water with inside or outside seating. Great service! Little Corona del Mar Beach seen from Inspiration Point. Bam! This rock in Little Corona del Mar looks like a hen to me. #beach Corona Del Mar Palisades Tennis Club is a great place to drop in and play tennis - everyone was very friendly and the facilities (and bar!) are great. #lifeatexpedia September evening in Newport Beach 2008 in USA Summer Sunset - Balboa Pier Newport Beach #LoveMyTown Take a long way home !!!
