If you want to avoid the crowded Southern California beaches this Summer, just head on over to this little hidden gem in Laguna Beach. And if you are lucky, Rapunzel might let down her hair and invite you up to her tower. Admittedly, I'm biased towards forested hiking trails. However, this trail in Newport (with tons of grassy hills and the ocean in the background) was so pretty. We went just around sunset to escape the California heat. PCH turn off at Cliff Drive. It's become a Christmas tradition for my husband and I to just go have a drink in the lobby, have a bite to eat, and then sit outside and enjoy this amazing view. My favorite California beach. Beautiful beach hidden away on Laguna beach. Laguna isn't a big place, so you can't miss the main beach right as you come into town - a gorgeous place to spend an evening. Visiting this state park is like traveling back in time to a 1920s beach enclave. Restored old cottages, a shake shack, and a terrific restaurant right on the sand. You would never guess that you are in a major metropolitan area. Beautiful sunset at Laguna Beach, California Walking along Laguna Beach coastline. So many things to discover! #green Laguna was a dream 💚 OK, folks, with the old man talking about cubits in the next lot, it's time for a little dry-time nostalgia.
Back in June, I visited one of the most wildlife-friendly places on the planet: Orange County. You heard that right. California has the kind of space that makes even one of their moderately-sized state parks dwarf entire counties in other parts of the U.S..
Crystal Cove is such a park. I walked for ten miles through the place and probably only saw a third of it. Unbelievable.
Oh, and it's got one other thing going for it: it's dry.

Once you walk down this is what you see... I love this hidden place. Watch where you step... The coasts of California are beautiful. Make a stop at the Pirate Tower at low tide and the rocky coastline gives you endless opportunities to explore & capture the rushing waves crashing against the rocks.
#BvSWater #ocean Beautiful sunset over El Morro Beach. While traversing the hilly streets of this neighborhood I came across this vintage bike next to a worn garden gate and it caught my eye. Take the public access stairs at Victoria and Sunset Terrace, and go right at the bottom. You'll have to climb over some rocks so sneakers are advised, plus go at low tide to avoid the waves. If you are ever in Orange County and have a free weekend day to spend any way you'd like, you might consider a trip up Wood Canyon and a little hilltop enclosure at the crest of the ridge.
It's a magical place, set apart from the rush and the worry of our time. You'll need to leave eventually, that's a fact, but take your time and linger.

I realized after 40 years that I should start exploring new beaches in SoCal every year like I do in Hawaii (Oahu & Maui) last June we stopped in a few spots in Laguna Beach. If you're looking for the full set, just follow this link: http://www.shootthesun.com/weblog/?p=2223] Soka University is probably the best-kept secret in all of Orange County, and probably all of California itself. You mention it to the locals and they just give you blank stares.
But it is the kind of place that will stick in your memory for the rest of your life. The grounds of the campus are situated at the ridge between Aliso and Wood Canyons, and command a view of the area that can only be described as staggeringly beautiful.
To say those canyons have competition from the scenery inside the grounds is to make the understatement of this young century.
Established just fifteen short years ago, the university seems to have spared no expense to build a campus worthy of its purpose. Here, you will find a delicate balance of architectural styles - heavily influenced by the very early European Renaissance, but containing elements of post-modernism, classical Greek, medieval Italian and even a hint of Empiric Spain.
But it isn't just a pretty face. The school has been consistently voted best in its treatment of its freshman class. It requires one semester study abroad, and has partnered with universities all over the world to make that a reality.
I'm afraid I didn't do too much looking into the academic side of the house. I was really too overwhelmed by its beauty.
And its calm. Come here on a weekend day and you'll spend most of the time in solitude. This was a welcome change from the parking lot called Highway 1, which took up the bulk of my late afternoon a day earlier.
I could breathe in this place, move from one astounding sight to another and just feel the calm descend over me.
That no-one in Southern California seems to know it exists is almost a comfort, really. It might mean that my second visit, whenever that may happen, will be as blissfully free of the tourist trappings as the first.
Either way, though, I just can't wait to go back.

Whale watching with Captain Dave's Dolphin Safaris is the BEST I've ever experienced. Here is a Humpback whale with Laguna Beach in the background.
