Once is Enough

I had a friend coming with me to Ottawa who is a history buff. We have stayed at the Chateau Laurier together in the past and I have stayed at many other hotels in Ottawa by myself. I thought we would try the Elgin given it's long history. In the end, he didn't come, so I picked the wrong hotel for me.
I was also attracted to the hotel because of it's claim to offer free WiFi.
The staff were excellent and as helpful as they could be. The hotel is old and a bit dowdy, but functional. The room was dead quiet except when someone was slamming doors loudly a few times during our stay and whenever buses would leave nearby. The beds were okay. I loved the reading lights--something I hardly ever see anymore anywhere.
The coffee could be a bit better. I just came back from Dubai a week ago and the in-room coffee was excellent.
My biggest disappointment was the WiFi. I used it in the morning to check my office files and it quickly became useless. The Elgin offers three levels of Wi-Fi: 1) Free and useless, 2) Paid and who knows; 3) expensive and suitable for streaming or so they claim. Why expensive hotels insist on charging for basics like WiFi is beyond me. I could not link to my server just to check the status of sales, bank accounts, etc., for a few minutes and decided never again to stay at the Elgin. I will go to a proper business hotel in the future.

We are glad to hear that found our staff friendly and helpful. We do want to apologize for the frustrations you had during your stay. We have just installed a new system for our wifi, which involves a number of technologies. We sincerely apologize as some of the moving parts are not yet moving well together. We are now bringing in a Gigabit fibre access, which brings in much more than most hotels. We are confident that we have ironed out those kinks and trust your next visit, should you give us another chance, will be smooth and enjoyable!
