Great central location, good beds and helpful staff. But our room was really hot. Air-conditioning didn’t work and windows only opened a tiny bit. They gave us a drinks voucher to apologise but we had plans to go out, so a refund would have been better. They also gave us a room fan but this didn’t balance upright and was noisy, so we had an uncomfortable sleep. Bedroom and bathroom were well kitted out but mould on bathroom ceiling and around old window frames needs looking at.

Within walking distance of central Oxford, this hotel is in a quiet area of the city and is reasonably priced given its location. While the room I had was a good size with a large bathroom, other rooms are smaller but have better views. I found the bed to be comfortable, but it may be too hard for some. The timed lights in the hallways and black-out curtains made for a lovely dark room at night. There was a wide choice of English and Continental breakfasts. The reception, cleaning, breakfast and bar staff were all very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again, and recommend it to others.

The property needs a general overhaul. Sad. Depressive. Dungeon vibe. Most Windows didn’t even open. Reception staff need retraining on customer service. It was just a sad overall experience in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. Oxford deserves better… please please do it the justice it deserves…

Central location but so quiet!
Central location, everything within a few mins walk. Parking is an issue but actually, the car park we used was cheaper for 24hrs than the hotel would have been of they had space. The bar was empty when we returned after our theatre visit but we found someone to serve us. Room was great, really quiet, only problem was no hot water in the morning so couldn't shower. Glad we showered the night before! Hoping for this to be compensated as overall, we enjoyed our stay in Oxford.

Travelling back to Oxford for college business, initially found I was allocated a room on third floor, problematic as the lift does not go that high and I have arthritis making stairs difficult. Reception quickly sorted an alternative on the first which was so much easier for me. Thank you.

The hotel is okay but my room (108) was awful - it had a noisy air extraction system directly outside the window. I asked to be re-roomed but I was told that the extraction system shutdown at 9pm, as if that were acceptable. I was then gently vibrated away when the system started again each morning. The staff would not re-room me without me paying a £50 supplement. I won't be staying there again.

Nice place to stay. Room was nice with good space to sit and nice bathroom. Staff courteous. Very nice lobby with comfortable chairs to sit and have a drink and read. Convenient to High Street, right next to Merton College, Magdalen College, and short walk to Radcliffe Camera.

Lovely room and super friendly staff
We stayed in an absolutely beautiful room. It was very large too, which was great as we had to get changed for a black tie event. The room was clean and modern and the staff were wonderful. Delicious full English breakfast too. Great central location. There was a problem with the plumbing in our room on arrival but they offered us an upgraded room, although this was also lovely it was much smaller. So, we asked to stay in the room if they could fix the water problem, which they did very quickly and we stayed in our initial room. Highly recommended. A great stay. Thank you! Peter and Landon

We did get upgraded free of extra charge on arrival. The room was comfortable but the price for one night without breakfast extremely high nonetheless. The hotel itself looks tired in corridors and the bar area.

OK stay ruined by poor customer service. I accidentally left a remote control at the hotel and despite a simple request to pop it in the post, the hotel declined to do that one simple thing. I won’t be staying again.

I had booked dinner, the receptionist told us on booking in I had not. The service was terrible from beginning to end, options were not available the menu, the wine waiter dumped our wine down, told us there was no Chardonnay when it was on the wine list. Our plates were collected badly, we were asked our room number three times and the entire dining and breakfast felt shambolic.

We have left behind a few things, including Micheal Kors sweatshirt in our room. We have spent a day in Oxford after checkin out. Before leaving Oxford we remembered that we have left them in our room and we reported that to the hotel. Staff at reception checked lost properties but they could not be found. Subsequently we rang the hotel and talked to duty mangers on four different occasions. Our lost property was not found. The property manger has never rang back in spite promising to investigate this with housekeeping manger/staff. It was extremely disappointing that this happened. The room on the 3rd floor was extremely small and things could not simply disappear. The room was very much overpriced! The bed 'on wheels' was moving, a space in the wardrobe was so short that a regular coat could not fit in. Breakfast was of poor quality. However, the location is fantastic. This historic hotel used to have an excellent reputation so it's shame that this has changed so much.

Great Location, not great hotel
disappointing stay so positives, great location, room was nice and modern bathroom. We were able to check in before the 2pm Negatives (and bear with me you might think these are not important, but when you pay £250 a night, i expect a little more) On entering the room to sleep, it was 26C so put the air con on and it was unbelievably noisy, and the fan was directly above my head. it was like sleeping on a plane or train, and the temperature barely changed all night - it was so hot. it was also quite loud outside the hotel, the fact you could hear it over the fan shows how loud it was. The room was clean - but upon waking and looking forward to a tea in bed, no tea bags!! and only 1 coffee. Yes i could have rung reception - but that's hassle i did not expect. The breakfast was very tasty - but again they did not have my room down for breakfast Again, you might think my minor issues are not worth worrying about, but you pay to sleep there, and i barely slept good luck

This is almost a self serve hotel. Skeleton staff. Empty beer and hard liquor bottles were always in the third floor hallway. Even when we complained repeatedly about this the bottles remained. Front desk told us they pick them up after midnight. Really they claimed the bottles came from the rooms. So they put them in hallway when cleaning at 10 am and they stay there, along with pizza boxes until midnight shift??? Be aware that although there is an elevator to second floor, there is a full flight of narrow stairs from floor 2 to floor three. Tough carrying suitcases! The hallways were not clean like they used to be. The rooms are never vacuumed in 5 days, the glasses and dirty mugs were never cleaned or replaced . We asked specifically about this they apologized but Never did they do anything. Staff is indifferent and won’t get up to do anything! Because of the hotels hygiene, we never ate a single meal there . We stayed here in last when the Okd Bank was full and Mercury used to be nice. No longer. We will never return! It is run like a cheap motel!

The air-conditioning in the room was good for the Summer. But no lift was very difficulty to bring the luggage up n down when move in and out the hotel. It has room cleaning every day to clear the rubbish bin, change towels n tidy up the bed but didn’t clean up the tables.

Great central location in a pretty side road off a main street, lovely old building, rooms over the street have a beautiful view of the Oxford university exam centre courtyard. 3 minute walk from the river, boat hire and botanical gardens. We had room 107 which had a bay window over the street. Good size room, great bathroom. There is some noise from the main road - particularly emergency services vehicles going by at intervals so may not be ideal if that kind of noise disturbs you. Staff are a bit hapless, the room hadn’t been set up as a twin when we arrived although that was what we had booked. There was no welcome when I arrived and I was left to stand for several minutes while the receptionist chatted with one of the housekeeping staff. We asked for extra pillows and they forgot. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

The mattress was one of the most comfortable I've slept on in a hotel. There are areas of the hotel that look like they do with a good deep clean ie. lift corridors, room surfaces. The staff were very friendly and amenable.
