A cacophony of cockerels

Pros: The staff.
Cons: Needs major upgrade.
Basic hotel on the edge of town approached through an industrial estate. Convenient for cruise terminal. Rooms need upgrading but will accommodate 4 people, so are reasonable value - for St Martin. Noise of dogs barking plus cockerels most of the night so not for light sleepers although bed was comfortable. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Break from resort scene but could use updating

Pros: They provided a bike, had a full kitchen, the location, and the staff was very nice.
Cons: Sound proofing, the mattress, sheet and pillow quality, the wireless, the rips in the screen door that let bugs in, the leaky kitchen sink.
Location: 10-15 minute walk from Philipsburg, perfect for anyone looking to be both near and separate from the cruise-ship scene.
We stayed in Simpson Bay for 5 days and then moved to Tamarind Hotel for the last 2 on SM. Stayed in a King Loft and had a mostly pleasant experience except for a few things. Favorites: fully stocked kitchen with lots of cooking tools, pooled/fountain, cozy/home-like feel of the room, hot water than was actually hot, location (close enough to Philipsburg to walk & far enough away to feel like you're away from the cruise-ship hoopla). Least favorites: the roosters (from 3:15am to 3pm, they would not stop!! We couldn't sleep on day 1, by day 2 we got somewhat used to them), the mattress (it was cheap, uncomfortable, and made me think it came from my grandmother's home 50 years ago), and the wireless (we paid $3 a day for the right to use a wireless router that couldn't provide enough constant signal to do more than check email in a command line email client 7ft from the router). The roosters were the only make it or break it for me. It was just impossible to sleep that first night and near impossible to sleep from 3am to 6am the second night. Unfortunately they were on another property and I do not think there was anything to TH could do about them. Otherwise, the room was clean, the pool was lovely, the kitchen was great, the wireless was a scam, and the mattress was on par with every Dutch B&B I have ever stayed in so I was disappointed but wasn't expecting better. Would I go back, only if I was guaranteed a room without the sound of crowing constantly.
