Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Wonderful location when you need a relaxing break. Our room however was looking tired but we were told a refurb is happening soon. Food was excellent although we stayed for three nights and choices were becoming limited in variety by the end. Staff were fab and friendly
This one left some mixed feelings I have to admit. Amazing and beautiful location, beautiful hotel building and area as well. Great food for each meal so huge compliments to the chef. Now the staff was a bit of an issue. Evidently the hotel was understaffed in the week after Christmas and it has really reflected on attitude of some of the staff. Some members were friendly and helpful, but some were to be honest the opposite of that. Really a function of understaffing I believe but when you position yourself as a 5-star hotel, you need to account for those things accordingly. As such, the service is not really commensurate with a 5-star hotel expectations (neither is the cost though, in fairness). Basically everything was great but the issues with some of the staff left a bit of a bitter aftertaste - hopefully this is sorted going forward. Huge thanks though to other members of the staff who were very friendly and helpful.
I had communicated with the hotel in advance of our stay to ask if they could accommodate my wife’s vegan and GF dietary requirements. I was assured that this was no problem.
However, every meal was a challenge. At breakfast, having asked for a plateful of whatever was not vegan and GF, the plate included two eggs, which they gave us no confidence that the vegetarian haggis and sausage were actually GF.
By way of an apology, the well-intentioned server presented us with two scones and clotted cream as we left the restaurant!
In the room, the smart TV apps didn’t work and a window blind was broken.
Although smart, clean and tidy the modern mono-chromatic colour scheme in the hotel was drab and lifeless.
The hotel claims 5 star status but I have no idea how that was granted by any independent rating body.
We did get some money off our bill when we fed back our experience on checking out, but our rare night away was spoiled.
The room was very nice, large and clean. The reception staff where very inviting and polite. However the overnight was somewhat spoiled by the restaurant and hotel bar. We were greeted by rude and poor service in these areas by a member of staff. The restaurant was virtually empty when we ate there with only 3 tables and we were made to feel as though they were doing us a favour by serving us. The food and drinks were excruciatingly expensive, which you wouldn’t have minded if it was very good however it was fairly average. We were brought wrong drinks at £10 for a single measure of gin, when they brought the replacement we were pretty sure it had no gin in it. There were several other things which made us uncomfortable during dinner so we just went straight back to the room after.
