Right in the heart of historic main St Placerville, or Hangtown, lots to do and see. The Cary House is well maintained , clean and very peaceful.

Beautiful Building, toxic Environment

Posted Apr 10, 2018
Upon arrival we were thrilled with the history of the building and the rooms had small historical touches that had us feeling we had stepped back in time. Then evening came and everything changed. There were bar fights with foul language that kept us awake for hours. The hotel shares a bathroom with the bar and on this particular evening the entertainment was male strippers. These men were parading around the hotel lobby in front of minor children. We called management and were told there was nothing they could do about it. It was suppose to shut down by 10:30 pm and it went on and on until 2:30 in the morning. We won’t be back.

We're very sorry to hear that you didn't have a pleasant time at our hotel. While it is true that we do not control the actions of our neighbors, I can tell you that following this weekend we have updated policies so that such an event will not be repeatable.

Worst experience

Posted Apr 2, 2018
Everything i requested when i booked, i got the total opposite. I requested for peace n quiet room, they put me right by the street opposite to a bar that's open til 2:00am with all the people screaming talking standing around so I didnt sleep good at all. And the guy at the counter when i checked in said they're fully booked, it's not like I was a walk in. I understand it's an old building but i requested as long as water n thermostat work I'm good. But no hot water when i checked in until afterwards. Aircon didn't work, and had to open windows the whole night n listened to the very very very noisy people standing around outside the bar until 2am. Staff were unfriendly including the night manager who made me feel like i was bothering him when i tried to borrow an electric fan because aircon didn't work. When i checked out the woman in the counter just didn't want to hear me out, about my awful stay. She said they're not able to view requests that customers make when booking through expedia. I've never met such unfriendly staff in a hospitality business until now. Except for the beautiful old architecture building and the fairly clean room i wish i have something else good to say about my stay.

Central location

Pros: I like that we can have two bedrooms and room to spread out. We also like sitting on the balcony and people watching.
Cons: The sink in our bathroom is damaged @nd needs to be replaced. Old is great, but unattractive ness is not.
Location: We walk the El Dorado trail and have a choice of many great restaurants and shops.
I meet a friend here every year. We love the “oldness” of the hotel.

Vintage

Pros: The "old" feel.
Cons: Mark the step down as you come out of the elevator into the lobby.
Location: Love the little shops. Could use a decent mani/pedi shop.
Love the vintage looking rooms. Very peaceful. Nice sheets and pillows.

Nice historic hotel...that lost our reservation

Posted Jan 28, 2018
Pros: Beautiful.
Cons: Check in staff in evening not knowledgeable. Not acceptable on a busy Friday night.
It's a nice historic hotel, but you have to understand what you're getting into. They lost our reservation, then couldn't put us into the suite that we had reserved due to 2 of the rooms not having been cleaned. The first one they gave a us key to had a "do not disturb" sign hanging on the door. We eventually ended up in the bridal suite which would've been fine if we weren't traveling with our 6'4" son, who had to sleep on the small rollaway bed. Being on the 4th floor, the hot water never arrived. Not a horrible experience, but I'm glad we were just looking for a place to sleep for the night.

From Good to not so Much

Posted Jan 23, 2018 on Hotels
The building and room were really interesting and the historical aspect of the building made it fun. Because it is a historical building one must anticipate that things will not be a tad quirky. The room was small but comfortable, had a newer TV and mini fridge with a coffee maker. It is in the center of town which is great for walking and going to all of the shops, restaurants, and bars. Even with newer windows it is noisy as there is a fire department close by. The room was reportedly remodeled ... many historical touches were nice though they obviously didn't update the 1970's linoleum, vanity, and plywood door that had a unique smell. The wifi was fast, the elevator was cool, the staircase was stunning. The only downside was that the only towels available in my room were a shower mat, a hand towel, and washcloth. Unfortunately, those were all that I needed the evening of check in. But at 0630 when I realized there were no shower towels I contacted the front desk and the on call answering service which directed me to a voicemail. Needless to say NO one returned my call. I had apps so I was left to make do with a shower mat and hand towel for drying off. No apology from the front desk. Thanks to hotels.com for making it right. The irony was that the linen closet was adjacent to my room. The property lacks attention to detail which made an otherwise pleasant stay a challenge. Note, parking is in the back and you have to walk through a brick alley to access the front door.
