Faded grandeur - should be so much better!Posted Apr 13, 2016 on Hotels
This is definite faded grandeur. The ground floor looks and feels beautiful but the rest of the hotel is tatty - not helped by a lack of cleaning In some of the common parts. Staff were slightly taciturn, but we went out of season and they might have been busy doing other things. The location though is fantastic and, crucially, there is a good breakfast! This hotel could be so much better with some love. As it is, it is over priced.

Great start point for mountain treksPosted Jun 11, 2014 on Hotels
The hotel is pretty basic but functional.... Close to restaurants and to mountain tracks..., like Caledonia trail.

New Helvetia HotelPosted May 1, 2011 on Hotels
Hot water was luke warm at best and given that it was a cold time of year, a cold shower was not a welcome option. We stayed two nights and the issue was not resolved. The hotel must have seen better days. Staff were however polite and helpful.

Cant wait to visit it in the winterPosted Apr 11, 2011
We had a great time, very cozy, warm environment and decoration that makes up the cold weather outside. Uncountable things to do in the area including mountain biking, nature trail walking and much more

An 'Interesting' hotel!Posted Sep 25, 2008
I chose the New Helvetia as it appeared to have some character and was fairly low priced considering we were out a lot. The photographer did a good job. Breakfast was a basic buffet with no hot food. Cereals and ham were of the cheaper variety. I stuck with cheese and toast. We had breakfast outside on the bar terrace which was rather nice. Our room was classed as a Junior Suite. It was a fairly basic twin bedded poor mattress room. The worst is the toilet which does not accept paper and our bathroom door would not close and the shower head needed to be held or it sprayed over the far wall. I have stayed in worse and if it fits your budget then maybe you will not get the same room as me. I dont think any of the rooms are different so you may as well have the cheapest. it is about 15 minutes down to the village and 25 mins back up the hill. Oh ,there is no lift in the hotel and most rooms are on the second floor. It will make you fit or kill you. Platres is quite a pleasant village and I recommend spending some time in the mountains even if it has to be the New Helvetia. Hope this helps your decision making
