Gorgeous facilities, great staff, bad management

Posted Sep 5, 2017
Pros: Facilities, restaurants.
Cons: Better beach, better whole-day entertainment for kids, if you close the spa, offer some compensation.
First, the good: the hotel itself is gorgeous, the dinners are fantastic, the staff is friendly and helpful. Now the bad: We came around the Labor Day to discover that: the spa was closed for renovations (no advance warnings, no meaningful compensation offered), no evening shows (because "low season"), the beach unusable (because the sand has been washed away, and because of the sharp rocks we could not walk into the water more than knee-deep). The kids' room offers only basic indoor entertainment (the staff is great, but there is only that much they can do when confined to one room) and does not offer food, so we had to take the kids with us for meals. During out stay, they started some on-site renovations, so there were ugly plywood walls right by the main pool. The rooms are great, but provide no means to dry swimwear. They charge a lot to have the rooms connected even when the hotel is empty (and Expedia fails to mention it). We came to the hotel because of the ratings, thinking that the great experience would justify the high price, and ended up being hugely disappointed. One can have a better experience for half the price.

Firstly, I wish to apologize for not living up to the high expectations that you brought with you on this trip to Grand Velas. Although travel during these periods is considered the low season, many responsible hotels invest in refurbishing and remodeling their facilities, just as we were doing. But another responsibility of any hotel is to ensure that each guest that visits us during these times feels that they receive excellent value for their investment, and again, I apologize for leaving you with that blemish on this trip. I hope that you can one day return with us and enjoy to the fullest all the updates and improvements that we have accomplished so far this season.

The staff was very accommodating and the rooms were clean and large. It was our first time staying in an all inclusive so we were a little nervous. The food was delicious and the restaurants were really nice. My family had a wonderful vacation. I would recommend staying in the Ambassador section of the hotel. It is close to the beach and the main pool.

Thank you for choosing our resort as your first all-inclusive experience. We feel very proud to know that you and your family enjoyed our “accommodating” staff, “clean and large” suite, delicious food and really nice restaurants. As you mentioned our Ambassador section is one of our three ambiances, a beautiful familiar area, near to the main pool and the beach. We look forward this first memorable experience in Grand Velas Riviera Maya be the beginning of the many more future visits. Very sincerely yours.

Amazing family vacation

Posted Apr 13, 2017
Our family has been to many high end all inclusive resorts but Grand Velas tops them all. The quality of service is superb, food is amazing and resort appearance is beautiful. The only area that we were not 100% satisfied with was the ocean, although it was beautiful there were some rocky areas which made it difficult for the kids to swim. With that said I would definitely visit this resort many more times in future.

Great Family Vacation

Posted Apr 5, 2017
We could not have had a better escape from the Maine snow. The weather was great and the people were so friendly. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the resort; there are so many visitors and such a large place but everywhere we went, people were landscaping, picking up, cleaning the windows. My husband loved the food; his favorite was Lucca; although we also ate at Chaka (my favorite), Sen Lin (my 11 year old son's favorite), Frida, and Azul (my 6 year old daughter's favorite). Due to some sunburn, my son decided to spend the last day of our vacation at the Kid's Club and he had a blast; he made some new friends and played video games together, decorated cupcakes, played soccer and saw a magic show. I wish that I had know about all the great activities they had played throughout the day. My daughter's favorite thing about the trip was the cool towels and juice we were greeted with when we arrived. She said it made her feel really happy that they would do that for her. And the pools; she LOVED the pools. Overall, it was one of the best family vacations we have every been on. No stress, no lines, no crowds, no waiting. We are already planning our next trip!

BEST OF THE BEST ALL-INCLUSIVE

Posted Mar 21, 2017 on Orbitz
Pros: EVERYTHING - from the beach to the pools to the gym to the spa to the incredibly friendly staff and service.
Cons: The Shuttle service to and from airport in Cancun stinks. Hire a private taxi for USD40. Ocean has tons of ROCKS.
Location: Ruins of Tulum. Cirque du Soleil. No real need to leave the compound. (8) 5-Diamond Restaurants, pools, drinks, spa, etc.
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Grand Velas for a week...last week. The flights into and out of Cancun are fast and cheap, the immigration is easy, customs is streamlined, the journey was a no-brainer. The 60-minute drive to the hotel was unintuitive, cumbersome, and a little expensive at USD55. On our way home we canceled the shuttle and took a private taxi for USD40 and didn't have to share it with other people - 40-minutes door-to-door, no stops. Grand Class rooms are amazing (they gave us a free upgrade). In-room giant jacuzzi, plunge pool, veranda overlooking the ocean, walk-in closet, huge shower / sink / bathroom. Service / staff were super-friendly, hospitable, attentive, and very intuitive. The pools are amazing. The beach is incredible. The ocean has rocks in it. Not quite sure if that's a deal-breaker. The meals were impeccable - each one better than the next. Eight restaurants. Piaf and Frida are the best - Lucca - a close third. ALWAYS top-shelf liquor. Don Julio Anejo, Herradura Anejo, Tres Generaciones Anejo - for those who like tequila. Weather was excellent every single day. The gym was clean, quiet, and basically brand-new. Not a single complaint except maybe the rocks in the ocean. The lovely pools more than make up for it and you can always walk down the beach a bit to a sandy spot.
