Out of Town on the River

Posted Jul 24, 2016
Pros: The room and the cleanness, the gym, the indoor pool area and the gardens. The way the building has been renovated. The chocolate bar left each night!
Cons: A kettle with tea and coffee making facilities in the room would be good. A better way of getting in to town for example bikes or boat taxi.
Location: Recommend Oporto Mountain Tours for a morning or afternoon trip. Cafe F Santiago opposite the colliseum. Serralves has a great villa and grounds & Art
The Hotel was lovely very clean and comfortable would recommend it. The biggest drawback was the distance of 2 miles from the town. As the hotel chain has another hotel in the town along the river in the main tourist part it would be a good idea to supply bikes at each hotel so that the visitors could cycle along the river to the town park their bikes at the other hotel for others to use instead of having to walk or use a taxi all the time. The transfers from the hotel were very time restricting. One evening we did try to eat in the restaurant but it was fully booked we were offered a bar meal alternative which would have meant sitting with it on our laps as there wasn't any tables and chairs in the bar area. So we didn't bother. Apart from these little niggles we really enjoyed our stay. Porto is a lovely city we stayed for 7 nights and did everything by foot we managed to see everything, if we had used the yellow bus and public transport we probably would have seen everything in less time. The pool areas and Spa were great we didn't have treatments but used the sauna, steam room and gym which again the cleanliness was exceptional. Our flight home was an early one which meant leaving at 6.30am our breakfast was organised for 5.30am in the main lounge and the transfer was arranged by reception which was no trouble. We really enjoyed our stay thank you.

Wonderful visit

Posted Jun 27, 2016
We stayed in this hotel during our vacation. The hotel and staff are amazing. Pros: The grounds are beautiful, the staff well-trained and helpful. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and thoughtful. It was the only place we stayed that had lactose-free products, I appreciated it because I could have the milk. This one thing demonstrates the thoughtfulness of the staff. The room was large even by American standards with a very comfortable mattress. We enjoyed being out by the pool, the outside patios, and dinner. Two slight cons: it is a distance from town, requiring taxi use and some of them do not know where the hotel is located. Second, the place is a bit of a labyrinth, I thought this was part of its charm but others may find it frustrating. I would happily stay here again and the prices are excellent. Thanks for a great stay.

Please replace grout around tub

Posted May 29, 2016
Pros: next to the Duero
Cons: replace the grout around tub
Location: not near enough to walk to City Center but hotel offers free shuttle on a fixed schedule (secure reservation for it early as only hold 6 people)
Hamburger at lunch is 28 euros...need I say more? Very convenient parking.

Great views of the River Douro, a bit out of town

Posted May 3, 2016
Pros: Buffet breakfast was excellent, staff all very friendly and willing to help.
Cons: A minibus runs into town 3 times in the morning & 3 times back in the afternoon/ evening. It was often full. They need a permanent shuttle service.
Location: Great views across the Douro. 40 minute walk into Porto historic centre.
We had an excellent 4 days here. Porto is small but very pretty & we had excellent trips to the Douro Valley & Portugals only national park.

Magnifique palais du 18ème

Posted Apr 21, 2016

Dear Dominique a, Thank you for sharing your experience at Palácio do Freixo. Your feedback is essential for us to improve and we already forwarded your comments to our management. Our unique location by the river offers a privileged view and unusual serenity, but we understand that our gorgeous surroundings is a little bit further from the city center. With that in mind, we offer a complimentary shuttle service to the heart of Porto, in attempt to shorten the distance. Regarding the mattress, we have informed our manager and we sincerely thank you for your suggestion. Once again, we sincerely thank you for your feedback. We are hoping to see you any time soon! Fine hotel in 18C mansion on the Douro River

Posted Mar 25, 2016 on Hotels
This is one of the finest hotels in all of Portugal. It is located in an important 18C mansion. Alas it is hemmed in by highways and industrial buildings and is very difficult to find when arriving by car. It is ten minutes by cab (and not a pedestrian friendly road) from downtown Porto. But the hotel and restaurant are very fine, there is ample free parking and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful.
