Don't be cheap, just stay at the resort.

Flew from west coast. Rather than take a red eye, we thought we'd arrive at 10:00 pm, get a cheap hotel for the night and hit the resort bright and early. We were the LAST ones in the airport. It was dark outside, there was barbed wire fencing all around with empty guard towers. It reminded me of a war zone. There were two people in unmarked cars offering to take us to our hotel, but the last attendant swore he wouldn't leave us and kept calling for the hotel "shuttle" which finally showed up. The three minute ride to the hotel was unnerving. Destroyed concrete foundations, no lights, the few buildings that were standing all had bars on the doors and windows. The lobby was nice and check in easy. I wasn't sure why there were four huge men standing in the lobby. They seemed like security which made me nervous. There were no restaurants or other food options and even if there were, I wouldn't have felt safe walking outside, so we all went to bed hungry. The amenities were what I would expect for a $35 / night hotel in the US which probably translates to $135 in the Caribbean. We awoke at 6 am to a whorable racket. The AC had formed condensation all night and dripped into my wife's suitcase and finally formed so much ice inside I thought the machine was going to fly into pieces. We had to take cold showers because the hex screw wasn't secure (or even made for that type knob) and so wouldn't turn to adjust the temp. We happily paid the shuttle $40 to get to resort
