Worse hotel I have stayed at

Posted Jul 9, 2017
Checkin took 2 hours, rooms not ready and we had to buy a upgrade for a suit that it was ready. We never received room service menu, most stag was friendly but overall experience was bad. We had to fight to get at least one restaurant reservation as they claimed they were full already, but when we went it was almost empty, and no variety at all; they just want you to go to the buffet, which at times it was better than the restaurant. Front desk was very slow.

Disappointment

Posted Jul 3, 2017
Would not recommend this resort to anyone. when arrived at the room toilet was not working which they fixed after multiple phone calls to front desk. shower was broken and was spilling water all over the bathroom floor. bed was hard as a rock and air conditioner seemed to be lacking Freon.

Great location right on the beach

Posted Jul 1, 2017
Staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. Meals were superior for all-inclusive. Too many insects was about the only negative and that is always a battle in the tropics. Rooms are average + but well maintained and very clean.

Put Back On The List

Posted Jun 25, 2017
Pros: As noted above, the food was well served and managed. The property is spotless and the individual rooms are very well maintained.
Cons: A better program for arriving guests at the specialty restaurants could be offered. Room placement for screaming babies and noisy guests could be done
Location: Essentially there is nothing to do nearby. The location for me is excellent as it is a 40 minute drive from my home.
This hotel has received negative reviews over the last 10 years and yet seems to have turned itself around. I was disappointed in not being upgraded as a VIP member but was told there were only 2 upgrade rooms and both were taken. This was on a Wednesday afternoon when about 25% of the hotel, if that much, was occupied. Also a restaurant reservation for that night could not be made as both specialty restaurants were booked. This was, of course, not the case as I later determined. However, there was a VIP gift in the room which was appreciated. The room was ready and was most pleasant other than the fact I was placed directly above a screaming baby for the entire period of my 4 day stay. Also, the guest placement program should be revised as there were many other rooms available throughout the hotel but others were placed next door and on the same floor, whose behaviors and overall manners were certainly to be questioned. I am sure space could have been made with even a room in between rather than having their noise through the walls all the time. Overall, the hotel food was excellent. I am a frequent guest at many different hotels on the North Coast and in the Dominican Republic, as I live only 40 minutes from this property and the staff does work very diligently at their jobs. The day noise at the main pool area is deafening but the beach area is fine and the secondary pool is excellent other than on Friday and Saturday. Overall, an excellent value.

Beautiful vacation, but construction wasn't nice.

Posted Apr 17, 2017
Pros: Staff other than the front desk were great.
Cons: Front desk staff and don't put people in rooms where construction is happening.
Location: We stayed on the resort. Beach, water, pool, etc.. were good.
I had a jackhammer going the first full day I was there... all day. I complained around 4. They stated I should come back the next day after 2 to request a room. So deal with it for another whole day??!! It was noted in a book and I was told the manager would move me to a room closer to the beach so it would be quiet. The next day it was as if I had never said anything the day before. I was showed a room in an area that looked under even more construction. Then I was told I could go to the farthest most room in the corner of the resort... like I was being banished. I was called "lady". I was at the desk for almost an hour. I was finally showed a room on the map that was on the beach and close to the main areas but away from construction. But when the porter picked us up after I packed up our luggage, he took us to a room still close to the construction and right in the middle of tightly packed rooms. I had him take me back to the original room. No apologies at any point. Rooms with construction around shouldn't be rented out in the first place. Other than this... I had a great vacation. My first time to the area and I will go back. Probably not to this resort though.

Nice family getaway!

Posted Apr 16, 2017
Pros: The staff and the food.
Cons: The beach cleanliness.
This was our second visit to GBP Rio San Juan and it was a very good experience again. The staff was very attentive and nice. The bars are awesome and so is the food. We recommend this hotel for families looking for a friendly place. By far the suites are the better rooms specially for crowded families, we booked a standard room but we were able to do an upgrade at the hotel without any hassle.
