Visit Downtown Puerto Vallarta and you’ll be in the old part of the city, where you’ll find many of the region’s most iconic religious and cultural attractions. A spacious coastal promenade skirts the western edges, with many inland shops and restaurants. Wander through this lively area to get a glimpse of the fascinating historic side of this famous resort city.

Stroll, jog or cycle along the iconic Malecón at the geographical and cultural nexus of the district. This long coastal boardwalk is decorated with tall palm trees and intriguing sculptures. Admire views of the ocean from one of the cafés and restaurants lining the promenade. Inspect the sweet delights of ChocoMuseo Puerto Vallarta and gaze up at the Caballito monument depicting a seahorse carved by sculptor Rafael Zamarripa.

Several blocks from the coast stands La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, with a central tower rising above the surrounding buildings. Gaze up at the iron crown at the top of the tower and head inside to attend a service in English. The church appears to hover above the Plaza de Armas, the city’s central square. Relax near the bandstand and study the plaza’s bronze statue of the city’s 19th-century governor Ignacio Vallarta.

Beside the plaza stands Los Arcos Amphitheater, an open-air theater known for its free concerts and events. Check out the model ships in the neighboring Naval Historic Museum and inspect the works on display in the Galeria Pacifico.

Downtown Puerto Vallarta consists of the Centro and Zona Romántica districts, tucked away in the southern part of Puerto Vallarta. It is surrounded by the sections of Amapas, 5 de Diciembre and Lázaro Cárdenas. Fly to Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport and drive south for 5 miles (8 kilometers) to get here in about 15 minutes. You can also travel here by bus direct from the airport in 45 minutes.
