Pros: The hotel is situated on the widest stretch of beach where it is not rocky unlike the other parts of Bayahibe. Most staff would greet you with a smile
Cons: Definitely the room condition. It needs a MAJOR renovation. Could use some smile from the staff esp. when you don't speak their language.
Location: Takes about 50 minutes from Punta Cana and 1hour 15mins from Santo Domingo. Bayahibe is near Saona island.
We are frequent travelers and our 2nd time in Bayahibe. We always loved the turquoise and calm waters in this area and have always been staying with Iberostar but since it was fully booked at that time, we opted to stay at Catalonia. We checked in on the later side and it wasn't a drag. We booked a standard room which is farther from the beach but we were given a choice if we want a room closer to the beach. An upgrade to a privileged room near the theatre but close to the activities and beach which we liked? why not!! Too good to be true! We couldn't really call it an upgrade because of the room condition but we were enticed because of the location. First of all, the room was dark and feels like you are left in the 1800's. The bathroom tiles were broken and were not grouted properly. Water was leaking from the handheld shower and if you actually take a shower, the water seeps in to the other side of the room, inside the cabinet and molds were already growing from water infiltration because of poor grouting. Water marks on the floor was also evident. We almost slipped twice and had to use towels all over the floor. It was a mess but didn't really ask for a room change because we were mostly on the beach anyway and because of the proximity to the beach and activities plus if this is the kind of condition for what they called a privilege room, I could only imagine what standard room would look like. Otherwise most of the staff were nice and would always greet you with OLA!!

Pros: Large clean room, nice balcony-good staff.
Cons: not much
Location: About 45 minutes from Punta Cana airport-no trouble with shuttle . We took a 5 hour trip-included boat ride on River Chavon and LaRomana.
We stayed in a Privileged room(recommended).Everything was fine. Close to the beach and restaurants.. Great beach and water. House keeping staff were excellent even with the language problems. Very few English speaking guests or staff but enough to get by.

Pros: Nothing!
Check in was a zoo. No one knew what was going on. We had book a prestige honeymoon suite. There were special amenities included with the package that we were never told about at check in. It wasn't till someone else on the beach told us to go to a separate building & check in with them that we found out the room included a free couples massage, dinner on the beach & tee shirts. The private tub on the balcony didn't work at all. The drain clogged & we had to get maintenance 3 times to keep it from overflowing into our room from the faucet that dripped constantly. The wifi never worked!!!!! You could connect but they never had enough bandwidth strength for it to send/receive. The food never changed even at the prestige level restaurant. Everyone in our party got sick at some point during our stay. The did have upgraded alcohol at the prestige bar but you had to ask for it or they served you rock gut. We are experienced travelers & have been to not only the Caribbean but to the DR several time. I would not go back here, would not recommend it to friends & recommend you look elsewhere.

When we got to the hotel it all seemed fine until we got to the room. The pictures that we saw on the site where nothing like the room that we got. The shower was super small and the literally turn off the water at a certain time in the morning. so! If you are like me and love to stay in bed when on vacation, get ready to take a cold shower. Another issue was the VIP. I did not even know that there was a VIP section in this Hotel. We found that out pretty quick. They segregate everything, The beach, the restaurants, the rooms and even the drinks at the bar. Depending on the color of you bracelet you were treated differently. That for me was the bomb! But if you must go to this hotel and want to hit the premium drinks make sure that you give a good tip from the beginning or else you might just spend 30 minutes just trying to get one. Overall I say just pay a bit more and go somewhere else because to me it was not worth it.

Resort with Low Standards of Hygiene

Pros: 1. most of the resort staff are friendly and helpful. 2. the food in restaurants is good. 3. the beach is excellent.
Cons: 1. Poor standards of hygiene: The A/C (including those in the 'privileged' rooms ) needs full cleanup. Some of the towels are filthy.
We stayed there for 4 nights and moved 2 times to different room. We got in the room I booked. I could believe it is in 3 star resort: It was like a century old. then we wanted to take a shower and found out the shower was not working. At this time we decided to upgrade the room. We moved to a privileged room, first day it was fine and we enjoyed. the second night, the AC stooped working. then the technician came to repair and it is filthy inside the tunnel and vent. I believe this hasn't been cleaned for years even from outside the room looks nice. The third day, both my wife and my baby started to have a lot of red rash at mid back. At night at 2am, my wife was woken up because water dropped from the ceiling!!! the fourth day, we asked to change the room. the front desk tried all his ways to avoid giving us a new room. first saying it is fully booked, then saying they are going to repair, since they cannot repair, he finally agreed to give a new room but started pushing us to move. In the meantime my baby started to having fever. though I cannot prove it, I believe the rash and fever were caused by the poor hygiene.

Nice Hotel but, Far Away and their are Bed Bugs in

Pros: The service is very good in the restaurants, front desk and, with the staff. The beach is very nice!
Cons: The mattresses in the rooms need to be fumigated and/or changed for the bugs..... Also, the Steak Restaurant needs to put more meat on the Rib's Dish
This Hotel has great service and good attention to detail. But, it is not Located in la Romana, Dominican Republic; it is actually located in Bahiabia which is another 25+ miles east of La Romana. This doesn't seem much for U.S. standards of roads and highways but, the secondary roads in the D.R. are not the best. Also, a taxi from the airport in Santa Domingo/SDQ is absolutely outrageous at USD $160-170 one way for a 1hr 10min ride. Therefore, to not have to pay over $350 in Taxis to make this resort we rented a car from the SDQ airport which was much better. The food is good to Very Good but, the Dominican Restaurant is quite Good! Downside: The mattresses in the room had bed bugs. They need to be replaced or, fumigated!!!! My legs were bit with whelps every morning.

Beautiful resort

Don't let the few bad reviews stop you from staying here. This was my second time going to the Dominican, first time at Catalonia but it wont be the last. First of all the resort itself is beautiful. Everything is immaculate. The grounds staff if constantly working to make sure that it stays that way. Speaking of the staff everyone i mean everyone from the maintenence, housekeeping, front desk to the wait staff was wonderful. For those of you that had bad experiences I guess you should treat people how you would like to be treated. They do speak very broken English but we communicated with all just fine. If the language barrier bothers you don't go to another country for vacation. The food was excellent. My suggestion is to definitely upgrade to privileged. Access to the terrace restaurant is worth it. The ladies at the spa were wonderful. The massage is definitely worth getting. The beach is the absolute best. The water is calm and way more clear than in Punta Cana. Wasnt hassled too much to buy time shares(they push this at all of the resorts there) once they knew we werent interested they left us alone. Be careful of the guys that drag you to their shops down the beach. Way over priced and they are pushy. The bartenders were all wonderful. There is a huge selection of drinks and they aren't stingy with the pours. Overall we loved the catalonia. You will too. Enjoy your vacation!!
