Staff not so nice

Posted Apr 17, 2017
Front desk staff is not as kind as expected. We have been there several times and it's the same thing. Personnel is not kind enough with the incoming guests. Last time we arrived at the hotel there was very few people around. We found out that the Hotel had our room available since the morning, but they won't give it to us unit afternoon. Good hotels would give you the room earlier if available. "Caravelas Restaurant" is the opposite, they are doing an excellent job, the problem is with the front desk staff.

Very different levels of quality of rooms

Posted Mar 27, 2017
Pros: Pool was decent. They have a market for qck food and water. We didn't eat the buffet so can't comment. Beaches were nice, but inflatables wr extra.
Cons: Clearly they need to bring some rooms up to reasonable stds. Get rid of all old bedspreads - gross - make same a Selvamar. Maids need to spot issues
Location: Access to pool and beaches were convenient. Could walk to pool and one of the beaches. Other beach was driving distance, but secluded.
We booked via Expedia and were offered a room in the Condos upon checkin. We would have been the only one in the building which tbh didn't feel safe to us. We looked at the room they assigned and the bedding a furniture looked like it came from the 1970s. We went back to the front desk and they offered two choices (to their credit this was a good gesture). We looked at both. The two bedroom condo looked like it was built in the 1950s and had similar old and unclean fixtures and bedding. We ultimately decided on the Selvamar area which is kinda like stand alone condos. The room was decent with clean and new linens and the A/C worked (other than when the power went out which happened just about every day - not sure if that was the fault of the resort or not...). However, the shower head came off and the person cleaning our room failed to report it to management for all three days in spite of the fact that the shower head was sitting their in the bathroom. Overall, if we go back, I doubt we'll go back to this hotel.

Age matters

Posted Feb 16, 2017 on Hotels
I visited Punta Leona with my 87 year old mom. While it was challenging for her to get around, we were able to make it work, albeit slowly. The walk to the restaurant is challenging for someone that age. Concessions such as ramps have been made for the handicapped but distance is still a factor. No one at the reception desk informed me that we needed a reservation for dinner. That said, the hostesses at the restaurant were able to make an exception and seat us immediately. Dinner was lovely and delicious. The waitstaff is attentive and professional. I've been to PL many times since it first opened in the 1970's. It's well maintained and the beaches are beautiful and perfect for snorkeling and swimming even with small children. Best of all it's only a two hour away from San Jose and just a short drive to Jaco.

Inconvenient Hotel - Arrecifes Apartments

Posted Feb 6, 2017
Pros: Cleanliness. Access to Playa Blanca.
Cons: Furniture needs an update. The same the TV. Eliminate THAT items check list.
Location: The hotel is far from most of the activities and commerce. If you go there, stay there.
Family of six at Arrecifes Apartments. The apartment is big enough, the photos are accurate. It has two comfortable rooms, the first one with one bed, and the second one with two beds. It accommodates six guests, but the beds are 'double size', which is between twin and queen size. Not comfortable for two adults. Kitchen, well equipped. Bathroom, roomy. Living room, big. Cleaning area, big as well. The building is not in the premises of the main hotel nor next to the beach, they are about half mile apart, but the neighborhood is quiet, and all apartments have balconies with views to the surrounding mountains. The road that goes to Arrecifes is in bad condition, you must be careful with your car. That's OK for Costa Rica's public roads, not for a private beach resort. What really disappointed me was the low customer satisfaction level that management has, with their 'stealing' paranoia. The room has a LONG items checklist that must be verified at check-in and check-out. You can't ask additional towels because they are not in the checklist. You can't ask for a bracelet replacement for a party member, that person must show up at the front desk because they think that "you are gonna to give it to someone else". Arrecifes apartments are in good shape, they look modern. But the main hotel is showing her age. Large parts of missing tiles in the swimming pool, the common areas look old, most of the infrastructure needs renovation. Not a three-stars hotel anymore, must be downgraded.

Old hotel

Posted Feb 6, 2017
Pros: Playa Blanca
Cons: All in general
The hotel was very crowded, the pool and facilities very old and you havet toqueue to breakfast. They have Surveillance posts everywere with no reason (if you are in the hotel) and the people was very rude. The only thing it was worth was Playa Blanca beach

Great beach

Posted Jan 31, 2017
Pros: everything, the staff was so helpful and accommodating
Cons: Larger rooms
Location: Everything on site met our needs
Warm, relaxing with the best sunsets, I did get stung by a jelly fish but nothing life threatening.

nice hotel,a tiny bit aging but extra clean.

Posted Jan 21, 2017
Pros: almost everything.
Cons: more smoking areas(quite minor)
Location: in costa rica, you do need a car if you want to explore.if not, you will do really well at this location.
this hotel shows some minor aging wich keeps it away from the 5 star, but is well maintained and super clean.location is what wants me to give it a 5 star.right in the middle of a jungle with monkeys, coatis, and all sort of birds.food is very good, playa blanca is one of the nicest beach in costa rica.playa manta is so so.they have a bus service for going to playa blanca and so on,but in costa rica,if you want to see things, you need a car anyways.by car, jaco is 15-20 minutes away since they only drive 80kph.only one thing if you are a smoker, little places to do so,but we managed.so in all....hotel 4/5.....staff 5/5....but location if you have a car 6/5. absolutely recommended!

Good location (access to Playa Blanca) BUUUUT...

Posted Dec 18, 2016
We won't be staying here ever again. This was our second time at the hotel. First time was two years ago. (1) the food is not anything special. Also crazy expensive if not included. (2) the room decor is from the 1950's. It's like they haven't put any work into it. (3) Our AC unit was turning on but not functioning. I was traveling with my five year old daughter who was asleep by the time I realized I couldn't make the unit work. Called the front desk. They sent maintenance. They weren't able to get it working despite trying for a long time. I asked for a fan. They brought it. Nobody acknowledged that this was an inconvenience. I am really happy we only had booked one night here (my daughter remembered all the raccoons here from the last time and wanted to see them again). Save your money-save yourself frustration. Stay somewhere else and find the access road to Playa Blanca yourself! We will be doing that next trip!!!
