Trouble getting refund

The hotel was nice for the price. I normally stay in a more expensive hotel, but my husband and I were trying to save money on this trip. That being said I did not rate the hotel based on other hotels I've stayed in, but rather on similar priced hotels that I have been to.
The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. I rated the hotel a 4 star because we had to check out early for personal reasons and we had a difficult time getting our refund for the unused days. I was told the refund would be processed after we checked out; however, it took a month for the amount to show up in my bank account. I emailed after two weeks, and I was told that the refund was never processed. After waiting another week and a half I emailed the hotel again. I did not receive an email back from the hotel, but a few days later I received an email from hotels.com stating that my refund had just been processed (1 month later). The hotel staff was VERY nice, but apparently upper management is either unorganized or unwilling to process refunds.
