The Carriage House at Mcdonald Mountain Ranch

    Adults-only vacation home in Hermosa
Just a stone's throw from Custer State Park! Three guest cabins, a suite in upper level of main house and one pull through RV space are located on 6 beautiful, serene, and quiet acres in Custer County, SD.The Carriage House is a new, two level, 800 square foot home that was built in 2016. It has 30O sq. ft of redwood decks on the upper and lower floors. The first level has a full kitchen, dining area, and a convertible living room that includes a high end queen sized sofa sleeper. We also have two twin size roll away beds available upon request. These two roll-away beds can be added to the lower or upper suites. The first floor has a private bath/shower restroom that is at the top of the stairs on the second level. The second level suite has a master bedroom which includes a separate full bath/shower. The master has a queen bed with high end bedding. There is an entrance from the master suite out to a beautiful wrap around redwood deck which has a dining table and chairs and a spectacular view of the mountains and meadows. We feel this is one of the best things about the Carriage House!! . There is a large oak tree that the deck was built around and there is a great view from every angle. It is a very peaceful and serene place to sit and relax. There is a washer/dryer available on the second level of the carriage house. **Just to make sure there are no misunderstandings, the Carriage House is one home with two levels and we do not rent them out separately. The Carriage house does include wifi, air conditioning, heating and outdoor dining facilities with access to a propane furnished barbecue grill. There is no cable TV in any of our cabins but upon request, a 32”Roku TV can be provided during your stay. *No age requirement for the Carriage House **There is 0 day minimum to rent the Carriage House in September 2020 only. For the 2021 season there is a three day minimum McDonald Mountain ranch also has a swing set and other outdoor equipment for children to use. There is a large meadow on the property and if you walk to the end of it you can see Mt. Rushmore through the trees. McDonald Mountain Ranch is in a very convenient location. Beautiful Lakota Lake, which is a fishing lake, is within walking distance (.8 mile) behind the ranch along with a creek and a waterfall to add to the beauty. Another popular and beautiful lake, Center Lake, is a swimming/fishing lake with picnic tables, barbeque grills, showers and restrooms and is 2 miles away from the ranch. The Black Hills Historic Playhouse is also with a few miles away and the beautiful Iron Mountain Hiking Trail is right around the corner. The entrance to Custer State Park is also within a few miles from our place. In our opinion we have the best and most beautiful property and location in the hills!Unfortunately due to many considerations and despite the fact that we are huge animal lovers, we do not allow pets in our cabins. Check in is at 4:00pm. Because we have a full house and are small staffed please do not arrive early. Late check in is fine of course but please notify us so we can make sure cabin lights are turned on and door unlocked. Thanks!! Ps. The owners of the ranch are Richard and Carol McDonald. Richard, an architect, grew up in the hills. His grandfather, Cecil Gideon, was the architect/builder of the famous Pigtail Bridges on Iron Mountain Rd and also Custer State Game Lodge. Gideon also provided help on Mt Rushmore and was a personal guide to President Coolidge. Richard has a rich history in the Black Hills and is willing to provide information to any who desire it.

    Gorgeous property!
The Carriage House at McDonald Mountain Ranch is a gorgeous property, nestled in the heart of the Black Hills! It's location is in close proximity to everything a tourist would want to visit in the area: Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and all the charming small towns around the area. The cabin itself it clean and beautiful, obviously lovingly designed by someone with an eye for detail. Richard McDonald himself is a gracious host, with a wealth of knowledge about the area. He gave great tips for dining out options and things to do in the area. My husband had a lovely time talking with him. The cabin is equipped with everything you need for a short or long stay. The family provides a cold breakfast for your first day there, an array of coffees/teas, personal hygiene items, in case you forget your own. It was just a wonderful property to get away from it all for a few days, social distance 2020 style.

    Sturgis 2020
We had a great experience! The property is beautiful. The cabin is perfect for 4 people anymore than that I feel it would of been crowded. Everything we needed was there for the week.

    Perfect home base
The carriage house was perfect for our family getaway. The location was great-20 minutes to Keystone and 20 minutes to Custer State Park. The property was clean and well organized. The owner thought of everything to make our stay comfortable. It was nice for my husband and I to have our own room and bathroom. Our kids, ages 12 and 15, slept in the living room. One on the pull out couch and the other on a cot. Both were very comfortable. It was the perfect place to come back to every evening to relax after a day outdoors.

I'd rather keep it my secret....
McDonald Mountain Ranch met every expectation and hope I had for the property. It's secluded but handy location was perfect for our group. We loved the beautiful hike through the meadow and trees to Lakota Lake and the little waterfall was fun to explore, too. The 9-and 5-year-old in our family thought the little climb up the rocky hill behind the Carriage House was very cool. Richard and family were very helpful in providing local information about areas we wanted to visit. Three adults stayed in the Carriage House, which is lovely as well as comfortable. I liked the touches like the pretty old antique dresser in the master bedroom. The only thing I would make clearer in the description of the property is that both (lovely) bathrooms are upstairs, and when we enjoyed breakfast on the upstairs deck, we noticed the patio table was wobbly, but who cares when you're enjoying a setting like that? Don't change a thing as far as we're concerned!

    5/5 Excellent

Beautiful cabin away from touristy areas
The family that owns this property was welcoming and fascinating to talk with. The property is about 9 miles down winding roads from touristy places like the town of Keystone and we loved the drive through one-lane tunnels and scenic pines with occasional views of Rushmore in the distance. Tips: 1. Don't trust Google Maps to get you there unless you use the GPS coordinates: 43.847791, -103.383876 (not the street address). 2. Buy groceries for your stay ON THE WAY, maybe in Rapid City. The nearest grocery stores are 30 minutes away. The "grocery" in Keystone is just a convenience store with eggs.
