We arrived late in the afternoon, and were told our confirmed room was unavailable as 3 units had sewer backups, but not to worry because they were able to get us a room in another lodge not too far away. The alternate accommodations had no food services or swimming pool, but was adequate. We wondered if the lodge was overbooked and didn't really have a sewer problem....on top of that, it was our 1st day in Costa Rica, and I missed a step at the reception area, resulting in a very bad sprain to my ankle. This 3 inch step would not have conformed to any building codes in North America. The pattern of the floor tiles camouflaged the step. The staff expressed concern, and 1 told me he was a paramedic, however, he went back to his reception job, and I had to ask other staff to find me some ice for my rapidly swelling ankle, while we waited for someone to guide us to our new accommodation 4 kilometers away on a very rough road. This was a very upsetting start to our vacation. Every conversation my husband had with reception staff, involved attempts to upsell additional experiences such as horseback riding. A week later, my foot is still swollen, even after treatment at a hospital in Liberia. This hotel failed to provide the services we purchased, and there was no acknowledgement of monetary compensation for the failed service or personal injury.
