Good downtown location
Don't let the appearance of the check in desk put you off this hotel. Watch your belongings while checking in. While outdated, the rooms are spacious and with high ceilings and varandas, and the a/c works well. Quiet room, wonderful view from the varanda. Nice breakfast for Brazilian standards. Good location - close to Santos Dumont airport and downtown attractions. Good value for money.

They list free Wifi on their site...the wifi connection was horrible!! Didn't work at all from the room and barely worked in the lobby. I specifically chose this hotel because they advertised wifi...not happy.

Great old fashioned place
If your looking for nice old place, good condition with that nostalgic feel stay here. The man operated elevator, old wood work marbleel spiral steps. Easy walking to restruants, historical sites. We loved our stay here.

Awful smell on the hotel and the room I stayed
The hotel is -1 star. I paid a VIP stay room and they put myself on a -1 star room. The cleaning staff said they reserved that room for people smoking and looks dirty. Was not my case. Expedia.com should take care when hotel like this wants to joining the time of the goods hotels.

This is the second time I stay in this hotel, and the concierge keeps harassing me to pay at my check out even though I had paid over hotels.com. Be aware that they will hustle you to pay again!!!!

Great location, decent room, depressing bathroom.
The location of the hotel is amazing, a short and safe walking distance from the airport, metro, bus, and consulate area. The restaurant area and breakfast are great, nothing to complain nor brag about. The rooms are generous, simple, and clean. The bathroom was an upset-- there were decorative wooden panels installed on top of the tile in the shower box stall that were slippery and covered in oil-- gross and dangerous. The "bathtub" is not something I would ever consider soaking in. The bathrooms are in major need of a makeover.

A little R&R
The hotel is downtown I have stayed in this hotel before. The hotel is close to public transit and close to many places to eat. You are downtown so a little noise and lots of traffic. The weekend are pretty dead downtown not much going on. Lapa is not a far walk as a museum or two are also nearby.

Old hotel close to Rio Sdu airport
Check in starts at 3 pm (later than everyone else), hotel has no parking nearby, elevator is so old that has to be operated by an employee, hotel is really old and obsolete. R$ 24.00 for wi fi in room. The only plus is the location, literally across the street from the airport.

Not a bad hotel, but not great - they don't allow check in until 3pm, which is ridiculous for being right next to a major airport. Its an older hotel in need of upgrades, but it was clean.

Very central, close to everything tourist need
Do not arrive before 3 as they do not have rooms ready. Facilities are old but work, don't wait for the elevator to take you down, just walk down the steps. Easy to find buses any time of the night to Central or Centro, close by. Easy access to key places. Just 300 meter's away from City airport and yet in downtown. Excellent breakfast included in the room rate, good and clean and reasonably priced restaurant. Avccess to Wi-fi

its OK if your on a budget
Great Staff, very clean bed sheets and towels, great breakfast. Every person I asked said to not walk around outside of hotel past 7 pm as it was dangerous. Hotel itself its old and the maintenance is not its best. One hotel floor needed scrubbing to get all the dirt out, AC only cools part of the room if any, only one tiny old and small elevator work that require hotel staff to operate.

Old and dirty
The hotel is very old and the only elevator is slow, old. It takes many minutes of time to makes its job. No air-conditioning system in the hotel. Bathroom is the worst. I took pictures of the unclean shower and floor. I do not recommend this place to anybody.

Very authentic hotel situated in the city. Lapa, the night spot is within walking distance. Copacabana beach is not too far away by cab. I like the old traditional lift in the hotel. Super Cool!!! Room is not great but satisfactory.

Hotel staff off the charts!
We had a great time at this hotel. it was relatively comfortable, very old-fashioned but quaint. the hotel staff is absolutely amazing at making you feel comfortable and at home. Carlos Henrique in the kitchen is a godsend ...he made sure all of my baby's bottles were always clean and that I had hot milk and he suggested great restaurants in the area for us. make sure you ask for him!!

Central hotel close to Airport
We stayed here for one night as it was close to airport at the time olf booking didnt realise two airports ! Not a major problem and pleased that we did not stay at the Int airport hotel. Room was basic and clean with a very powerful shower !! Buffet breakfast was good. Hotel staff very helpful.

Great location and professional staff
The location is very nice. Obviously it's close to the airport, but also within walking distance to lapa. The staff was very helpful and professional and also spoke english. Rooms were clean and the beds were nice. They also had a safe in our room. Breakfeast was very good. They charged extra for wi-fi in the room and the free wi-fi in reception was very slow.

The Hotel is really old, it needs an upgrade in every erea you can immagine, the staff is o.k the location is not to bad, but for the price they are charging I expected a lot more, if I had to stay there again, I would not.

Forget Good Sleep!
I got a room on Avenida Beira Mar, a very busy and noisy street. With Santos Dumont Airport is a few yards away, I had no good sleep on any of the 6 nights I spent there. Nevertheless, I liked the elevator big time! Whenever you want to use it, you press a button and wait for one of the bell boys to come to the floor you are on, then you step inside, the bell boy closes 2 slide doors, and takes you to the desired floor. Very interesting to see a hotel preserving an old stuff, let alone the maintenance it requires given the frequency of its use.

Hotel staff was amazing and super helpful; hotel itself was a bit dated and lacked a gym, but the free breakfast buffet (typical for Brazil) was awesome!!

Worst hotel in Rio
Room door was broken and wouldn't close. Had to barricade it every night! Constant noise from outside. Bed was very uncomfortable.

It is an old Hotel with only one working elevator, the elevator is only for 4 persons and one is the staff member needed to operate the elevator. Otherwise is a nice hotel.

Don´t go there!
During the second day a smartphone and some minor jewels disappeared from a small suitcase in our room. The manager and the staff hinted it was a lie.They don´t even wanted to make a report.

Better than you would expect
I have stayed in many hotels in Rio, and this one ranks as my second favorite. It is an older hotel, but what you get for the value is very good. You're located in Centro, in a safe and accessible part of the downtown area. The only negatives are that the elevator was not really working when I was there, and there are not many restaurants close by. But the rooms are clean, renovated, and the cable TV is better than most.

Good location, clean hotel, friendly staff.
Centrally located, good for the price. Excellent staff and always helpful. Great breakfast. You can even have fried cheese, all kinds of fruit. They have a historical manual elevator. You just have to wait for a little when you are coming down but no problem going up. If you want to be in downtown area, it is a great place to stay for the price.

Scary! This hotel has not been updated since it was built the electricity has those old outlets and you can not plugg in your computer or hair dryier the hotel does not provide with an adaptor, in order to use the elevator you have to call the reception so that an employee can run it or use the stairs, homeless sleeping around it, very unconfortalbe beds and the pillows are dirty and smely, the air conditioner is manual and the charges for internet usage are very high that is besides been a very expensive ONE STAR HOTEL the pictures shown in the web page belong to another hotel.

okay for a second or third choice
Our request was for 3 persons and a view. We got for a decent price. Pros: Nice staff. Superb view of the surrounding area. $5 taxi ride to lapa. Dinning room is nice. A/C in room worked well. Cons: Crazy old elevator. Stay away from the 9th floor. We requested to be moved to the 6th floorafter talking with the staff. The 3rd person received a hard mattress. The hotel is old!!! The bathroom is okay not newer and looked a little dingy. If you are looking for a decent hotel for cheap then this is a good 2nd or 3rd choice.

Great location for flying from Santo Dumont Airpor
Great location! Walking distance to Santa Dumont airport. Made an early morning flight very easy. Wouldn't stay there for a beach vacation, but perfect for our one night in Rio on our way to Manaus.
